Coach April Gitzen enters her 8th season for the West Virginia Wesleyan College Women's & Men's Teams. In her seven years here she has had outstanding success through her unique coaching philosophy. “Swimming and all that it encompasses must be fun. Training needs to be cutting edge and structured so that the student-athletes are constantly challenged but at the same time encouraged to have fun.” The men’s & women’s swimming program continues to be a notable program growing each year while achieving remarkable results. In the past seven years every swimmer has achieved a personal best time in nearly every event he/she swam. “Our program is truly one of a kind & simply remarkable.”
Gitzen has captured various titles including the 2017 ASC Women's Coach of the Year and the 2018 MEC Men's Coach of the Year. The men's team won the MEC this past season 2017-2018 and the women's team were runner-up.
Coach Gitzen is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She attended California University of Pennsylvania where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management and a Master of Science in Sport Management; Intercollegiate Athletic Administration. She was a 4 year member of the women's swim team where she held pool and school records. Coach Gitzen was also a notable member competing at the NCAA DII Swimming and Diving Championship.
