Catawba Swims Past Barton

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- Catawba topped host Barton in both men's and women's swim action on Saturday afternoon at the Rocky Mount Family YMCA. The Catawba Indians men picked up a 123-56 victory with the women winning 94-48.

The Catawba men won nine of the 11 events with Mario Zaninovic, Joao Barreto and Arnold Blohme each claiming two individual wins. The women earned eight wins with Marcia-Mariel Erhart winning two individual events.

Zaninovic took first place in the 200 free (1:47.22) and the 500 free (4:49.25). Barreto won the 50 free (22.27) and 100 breast (1:01.26), while Blohme had wins in the 400 IM (4:37.35) and the 100 back (55.53). The other individual win came from Federico Borrego Higareda in the 100 fly (52.43).

Erhart's two wins came in the 1000 free (10:56.16) and the 100 back (1:04.95). Five other Lady Indians recorded wins. Emily Najar in the 200 free (2:04.30), Cassie Shear in the 50 free (26.50), Jessica Daniel in the 400 IM (5:02.86), Susanne Reeg in the 100 fly (1:01.80) and Amy Cujas in the 100 free (56.07).

Reeg, Shear, Najar and Cujas swam to a win in the women's 200 medley relay (1:54.23) with Blohme, Higareda, Robert McCue and Barreto swimming to a win in the men's 200 medley relay (1:39.02). Catawba's men also got the 11 points in the men's 200 free relay (1:35.58) behind Zaninovic, Dylan Twiddy, McCue and Dustin Ruppart.

Next up for Catawba is the Bluegrass Mountain Championships from February 8-11 at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center in Charlotte, N.C.

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – In the program’s final regular season action before the postseason, the Barton men’s and women’s swimming teams combined for five total wins in a home meet against Catawba College on Saturday afternoon inside the Harrison Family YMCA.

In addition to the five race victories, the two teams combined to set 15 personal best times. However, Catawba was able to win both matchups, earning a 94-48 victory in the women’s contest and a 123-56 victory in men’s action.

On the men’s side of things, Robert Zamorano set a personal best in the 1000-yard freestyle race after reaching the wall in 10:21.06 for the win. James Day claimed the second victory for the BC men, finishing the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.56.

Zamorano also set a PR in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:38.86 to finish second overall, while Luis Reyes took home two second place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly races, turning in a personal best time of 22.71 in the freestyle.

For the women, Annika Jasek-Rysdahl and Sydney Turner each won an individual event before joining the 200-yard freestyle relay team to claim the Lady Bulldog’s third victory of the meet.

Jasek-Rysdahl won the 500-yard freestyle race and finished second in the 400-yard individual medley with a personal record time of 5:15.10. Turner’s win came in the 100-yard breaststroke where she finished with a time of 1:37.03, a personal best.

Shelby Cash had two third place finishes as teammates Sierra Hill and Tia Broady had one Top 3 finish apiece. Jasek-Rysdahl, Cash, Turner and Hill made the 200-yard freestyle relay team that finished with a program best time of 2:05.26 for a first place finish.

Barton will spend the next two weeks preparing to compete in the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships held in Charlotte, N.C. on Feb. 8-11.
