Davidson Duals Feature Strong Swims

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Liberty won seven out of nine swimming events contested during Friday’s first day of the Davidson Duals, held at Davidson’s Charles A. Cannon Pool.

      The Lady Flames lead all three opponents in dual-meet scoring, holding a 119-60 lead over Georgia Southern and 126-38 lead over Gardner-Webb while also leading the host Davidson Wildcats, 105-74.

      Liberty got off to a great start, going 1-2 in the meet-opening 200 medley relay. The quartet of Brittany Weiss, Prudence Rooker, Ashley Mauzy and Rachel Hoeve went 1:45.80 for the win.

      Delia Weber kept the momentum going, clocking 10:22.84 to win the 1000 freestyle by 15.44 seconds over her nearest competitor.

      Hoeve won the 50 freestyle for the sixth time this season, touching the wall first in 24.38. Colleen Donlin swam 24.58 for third place, while Ricki Lee Hodges placed sixth with a 25.01 effort.

      Alicia Finnigan picked up her first of two victories on the evening, edging out Gardner-Webb’s London Schumacher in the 200 individual medley, 2:08.86 to 2:09.04. Liberty’s Taylor Lynch took third overall in a season-best 2:10.31.

      Weiss outswam two-time Atlantic 10 Performer of the Year Elyse Lankiewicz of Davidson in the 100 back, with Weiss winning in 57.26 and Lankiewicz following in 57.44. Victoria Tschoke collected a third-place finish, swimming 59.19.

      Finnigan clocked 2:02.86 to win the 200 fly, with second place coming in 5.29 seconds later.

      The Lady Flames closed the meet with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay. Hannah Baker, Hoeve, Pond and Weiss teamed up for a 3:29.90 winning time.

      Earlier in the meet, Lankiewicz won the 200 free in 1:50.69, with Liberty’s Baker (1:54.87) and Ashlee Sall (1:55.63) taking second and third, respectively. Chelsea Pond swam 1:56.16 for fifth place.

      Baker posted Liberty’s best time in the 100 breaststroke, finishing third in a season-best 1:07.03. Baker’s 1:07.03 puts her eighth on Liberty’s all-time top 10 performers list. Hodges (1:07.36) and Rooker (1:07.43) followed in fifth and sixth.

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Georgia Southern Swimming & Diving entered the stretch run of the 2016-17 season on Friday night with a solid opening session of the Davidson Duals. The Eagles lead Gardner-Webb 107-70 after 10 events, but trail Davidson and Liberty. Gretchen Mossburg picked up an event win with a season-high score on the 1 Meter diving board.

“Tonight was a little rough in spots, but overall it was good start to the weekend,” said Head Coach Laura Thomas. “We have people in some different events this weekends and are using it as a chance to get in some more racing before our conference meet in a few weeks.”
