Swarthmore Men, Ursinus Women Race Ahead at Centennial Conference Champs

Swarthmore took a major step toward unseating Gettysburg as the Centennial men's swimming champion on Saturday night.

The Garnet captured four of the night's seven events, including both relays, to take a 112-point lead (511-399) over eight-time defending champ Gettysburg. Ursinus is third with 344 points, followed by Franklin & Marshall (341), Washington College (314), Dickinson (288) and McDaniel (161).

The Swat quartet of Jeff Tse, Alejandro Hernandez, Andrew Steele, and Chris Smith, set a meet record in the 200 medley relay, touching the wall in 1:31.57. 

The Bullets' Ogden Leyens picked up his second gold medal with a win in the 200 freestyle in a Conference-record time of 1:38.95.

Teammate Ty Dougherty earned his second gold medal of the meet with a victory in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 56.22. 

Swarthmore's Liam Fitzstevens became the first back-to-back 400 IM champ since 2008, winning the event with a time of 4:03.76, while teammate Andrew Steele defended his title in the 100 fly with a clocking of 49.48.

Ursinus' William Benn became the first Bear to win the Centennial 100 back, touching the wall in 50.69.

Sunday's prelims begin at 10 a.m. with the finals slated for 6 p.m.

Three-time defending champion Ursinus took control of the 2017 Centennial Conference women's swimming championship on Saturday night at Franklin & Marshall's Kunkel Aquatic Center.

The Bears won four of the night's seven events to boost its point total to 567 points and take a 197-point lead into the final evening. Swarthmore is second at 370, followed by Gettysburg (352), Washington College (287), Franklin & Marshall (287), McDaniel (240), Dickinson (237) and Bryn Mawr (124).

The Ursinus 200 medley relay kicked off the night with a Conference record in 1:46.06. Clara Baker captured the 100 fly, missing her own CC record by .01 seconds. Peyten Lyons won her fourth and fifth gold medals of the meet, winning the 100 back and swimming the lead-off leg of the 200 medley relay. The Bears' 800 free relay capped the evening with a victory in a time of 7:44.51.

Swarthmore soph Emily Bley held off Ursinus' Olivia Tierney by .01 seconds to win the 400 individual medley. Dickinson's Olivia Lyman picked up her second victory of the meet with a win in the 200 free (1:53.66). Washington College's Jenni Clune was the first to the wall in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:05.03.

Sunday's prelims begin at 10 a.m. with the finals taking place at 6 p.m.
