CMS Sweeps SCIAC Championships Behind Epic Final Day Comeback By Men

Down by two points entering the final day the Stags from CMS finished strong on the final day with a total of 1030 points to take the 2017 SCIAC Championship crown. Pomona-Pitzer was just behind with 1022. Redlands narrowly edged out Cal Lutheran for third as the Bulldogs finished with 558 points and the Kingsmen 540. La Verne finished with 347 just ahead of Caltech's 341. Occidental came in seventh with 333 while Whittier was in eighth with 312. Chapman finished in ninth with 172.

Scoring for the day kicked off with the men's 1-meter diving which saw a repeat on the podium from the 3-meter performances.  The trio of freshman took the top three honors with Kendall Hollimon of CMS earning the top spot with 594.05. Jacob Miner of Redlands took second with 480.45 while Andrew Tompkins from La Verne finished third with 461.00.

A meet record was set in the 1650 freestyle by freshman Benjamin Brewer from Cal Lutheran who finished in a time of 15:28.26.  CMS freshman Ben Culberson touched second in a time of 15:33.89 while Cal Lutheran junior Jonah Hobbs finished third in 16:03.22.
 
CMS senior Matthew Williams picked up another individual win in the 200 yard backstroke, an event in which he holds the SCIAC and meet record. He finished first with a time of 1:48.06 followed by Redlands sophomore Joe Widuch who finished in 1:50.40. CMS freshman Sam Willett finished in third with a time of 1:51.25. 
In the 100 yard freestyle CMS picked up the win as senior Graham Spurzem touched first with a time of 45.45 while La Verne senior Tim Polman finished second in 45.79. Zach Zamecki of Cal Lutheran finished in third with a time of 45.83.

Caltech freshman Tom Gallup earned his second trip to the podium with a first place first in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:02.11. CMS freshman Henry Limm finished second with a time of 2:04.15 while Pomona-Pitzer sophomore Teddy Koerner came in third with a time of 2:04.51.
 
In the last individual race of the evening sophomore John Everett of CMS took the top spot in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:50.49.  Austin Lashley a junior from Occidental took second with a time of 1:51.65 while senior Aaron Lutzker took third with a time of 1:51.71.
 
Pomona-Pitzer captured the men's 400 yard freestyle as Adrian Hui, Daniel Villars, Samuel To and Mark Hallman finished first with a time of 3:03.00. Cal Lutheran finished in second with 3:03.50 while CMS finished in third with 3:04.22.  

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women led from day 1 of the 2017 SCIAC Championships and captured the title with a total of 1289 points for their eighteenth overall SCIAC championship. Pomona-Pitzer finished in second with 993 points. Redlands edged out Chapman for third with 501 while the Panthers finished with 464.5. Occidental came in fifth with 384 as Cal Lutheran came in sixth with 358 just ahead of Whittier college at seventh with 335. La Verne (258.5) and Caltech (180) finished eighth and ninth.

The evening started off with the 1650 freestyle which saw the Athenas take the top two spots with junior Elizabeth Carrade taking first with a meet record of 17:09.26 while fellow junior Lauren Rosenberger came in second in 17:36.66.  Pomona-Pitzer junior Vee Vanderpoel came in third with a time of 17:40.76.

CMS won their second event of the evening in the 200 yard backstroke as Ivy Chen took the top spot with a time of 2:03.73.  A pair of sophomores from Pomona-Pitzer took second and third as Angela Ling touched in 2:04.08 and Sarah Jin in 2:04.62.

Pomona-Pitzer won their first event of the evening as Madison Kauahi picked up the win the 100 yard freestyle in a time of 51.17. Jocelyn Crawford of CMS came in second with a time of 51.24 while Mardell Ramirez from Cal Lutheran came in third with a 51.77.
Freshman Claire Bacon-Brenes from CMS returned to the top of the podium as she took first in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:19.06. Senior Ellie Jaques from Redlands continued a dominant showing at the championships with a second place finish with a time of 2:21.48.  Senior Emily McKinnon from CMS took third with a time of 2:22.37.
 
Sabrina Kwan from Pomona-Pitzer took the title in the 200 butterfly with a time 2:04.95 while Naomi Ngo from CMS finished in second with a time of 2:07.33 while Caltech sophomore Brittany Percin came in third with a time of 2:08.16.

In the 400 freestyle relay CMS topped the podium as Kelly Ngo, Stephanie Doi, Emma Stacy and Jocelyn Crawford finished first with a time of 3:29.18. Pomona-Pitzer was second with a time of 3:31.03 while Chapman finished third with a time of 3:35.21
