MIT Men, Women Grab Day 1 Leads at NEWMAC Championships

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) took gold in both events and claimed three of four all-conference spots in the first night of the 2017 New England Women’s Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Swimming & Diving Championships which is being held in the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) Sports & Recreation Center.
 
MIT (135 points) holds a 42 point lead over WPI (92) as Wheaton College is third (82), U.S. Coast Guard Academy is fourth (78) and Springfield College sits fifth (61). Clark University (56), meanwhile, has a slight edge over Babson (55).

800-Yard Freestyle Relay
 
Champion: MIT, 6:41.11 (Meet Record, NCAA ‘B’ Cut)
-        David Morejon, Peter Crocker, John Matthews, Dougie Kogut
 
*Note: MIT won for the second consecutive year. Matthews and Kogut were in last year’s lineup.
 
Runner Up: Coast Guard, 6:50.00

3-meter diving
 
Champion: Samuel Solomon, MIT 541.90 (NCAA ‘A’ Cut)
 
Runner Up: Jeremy Sands, MIT – 485.00 (NCAA ‘A’ Cut)
 
*Note: top three performances were all ‘A’ cuts by MIT. Sands was the runner up last year.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) claimed the initial lead on the first night of the 2017 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Swimming & Diving Championships, hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute's (WPI) Sports & Recreation Center.

Cambridge's Engineers totaled 70 points, followed by the host Engineers with 60. Springfield College was four points behind in third as U.S. Coast Guard Academy totaled 52 and Wheaton College shored up the top five with 48. Smith and Wellesley led the next grouping with 42 as Clark University ended the night eighth (36). Mount Holyoke College and Babson College share ninth place with 30 points.

800-Yard Freestyle Relay

Champion: MIT, 7:34.77 (NCAA 'B' Cut)

-        Veronica Jedryka, Kathy Pan, Kelly Craig, Addie Chambers

*Note: Third consecutive 800 free title for MIT; Jedryka was on all three, Chambers was in last year's lineup.

Runner Up: WPI 7:40.70

-        Jenny Day, Eva Childers, Emily Matsco, Emily Martin

*Note: Day, Childers, Matsco, Martin were also second in 2015.

The women will have the 200-yard freestyle relay, 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard IM, 50-yard freestyle, 400-yard medley relay and 1-meter dive tomorrow beginning with the trials at 10:00 a.m. Finals are set to begin at 6:00 p.m.
