Whitman College maintained its leads in both the men and women's divisions after the second day of competition Saturday in the 2016-7 Northwest Conference Swimming Championships here at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.
In the women's division, Whitman has 432.5 points, followed by defending champion Pacific Lutheran University with 400, Linfield College 312.5, the University of Puget Sound 299, Whitworth University 235, Lewis & Clark College 208, Willamette University 155, and Pacific University (Ore.) 142.
In the men's division, Whitman has 362 points, followed by Pacific Lutheran with 349, defending champion Whitworth 337, Linfield 333.5, Puget Sound 245.5, Willamette 182, Lewis & Clark 158, and Pacific (Ore.) 140.
Several NWC and NWC Championship meet records were set during the evening finals. In the women's 200 medley relay, Whitman's 1:45.12 broke both records, as did Kaedi Fry's 4:30.30 in the women's 400 individual medley and Mara Selznick's 55.94 in the women's 100 backstroke. New NWC Championship meet records only were set in the men's 200 medley relay by Linfield with a 1:30.93, and by Cole Weinstein of Whitman with a 3:58.64 in the men's 400 individual medley.
Other women's winners included Therese Ackman of Pacific Lutheran with a 57.24 in the 100 butterfly, Evette Dow of Linfield with a 1:53.64 in the 200 freestyle, and Danielle Booth of Pacific Lutheran with a 1:05.09 in the 100 breaststroke.
Other men's winners included Eben Schumann of Whitworth with 48.68 in the 100 butterfly, Clark Sun of Whitman with a 1:39.88 in the 200 freestyle, Dennis Liu of Pacific Lutheran with a 57.20 in the 100 breaststroke, and Neirton Oliveira and Patrick Wilber, who each swam a 49.81 to tie in the 100 backstroke.
The day closed with Linfield winning the women's 800 freestyle relay with a 7:45.97, and Puget Sound taking the men's 800 freestyle relay with a 6:55.36.
In the morning preliminaries, two new NWC Championship meet records were set. In the women's 100 backstroke, Selznick set a new mark with a time of 56.43 (which she broke during the finals), while in the men's 100 backstroke, Oliveira became the new record holder with a mark of 49.80.
