Queens Cranks Out Pool Record In Wins Against Davidson, George Washington, UNC-Asheville

Queens kicked off the weekend with wins against Davidson, George Washington and UNC-Asheville tonight in Charlotte.  The team's performance also including a pool record in the men's 800 free relay

CHARLOTTE, N.C.-  The Queens University of Charlotte men’s and women’s swim teams tabbed wins against Davidson College and George Washington on Friday, September 30, 2016. The women’s team also saw a win against UNC-Asheville. Queens had 12 of the first-place finishes in the 18 event meet including a pool record in the men’s 800 freestyle relay.

On the men’s side, Queens tabbed a 115-51 victory over George Washington and a 118-48 win over Davidson. The women would take a 117-49 win against UNC-Asheville, a 99-67 win over George Washington, and a 107-59 win against Davidson.

Additionally, the Davidson men’s team beat George Washington 89-77. The women for George Washington beat UNC Asheville 102-64, while Davidson went 89-77 against UNC-Asheville. George Washington would take an 89-77 win over Davidson.

The day finished with a pool record coming from the men’s 800 yard freestyle relay team. Nicholas Arakelian, Dion Dreesens, Parker Cook-Weeks, and Hector Tricas, respectively, touched for a time of 6:53.07 to shatter the previous time of 7:07.16.

With an early start, Queens saw mirroring wins in the 400 yard medley relay from both the men’s and women’s teams. Hannah Peiffer, Shelly Prayson, Alexandra Marshall, and Kyrie Dobson, respectively, reached the wall with a half a second gap for first place in the event. They would grab a time of 3:51.55 for the first place finish. On the men’s side, Zach Bunner, Inigo Alarcia, Paul Pijulet, and Dreesens, respectively, tabbed the first place result with a 3:20.65 to top the pool by nearly five seconds.

Dreesens grabbed the first individual first-place finish of the meet for the Royals. He swam a 1:40.60 in the 200 yard freestyle to out touch second place by one and a half seconds.

On the women’s side Kyrie Dobson claimed first in the 50 yard freestyle to sprint her way to the wall with a time of 23.90. The men’s side of the event saw a 1-2 finish from Pijulet and Ben Mayes, respectively. Pijulet touched with a 20.87 in the sprint while Mayes secured a 20.99.

In another 1-2 finish, Arakelian and Inigo Alarcia claimed the 200 yard individual medley. Arakelian finished first with a time of 1:51.30 as Alarcia rounded out the top with a time of 1:54.73.

Dreesens saw another first place swim in the 200 yard butterfly. He clocked a 1:51.67 for the event.

Queens claimed both sides of the 100 yard backstroke. Peiffer led the women’s competition with a time of 57.32 for first. Pijulet claimed first on the men’s, for his second first-place swim, with at time of 48.95.

The Royals also claimed the 100 yard breaststroke with Dasha Talanova swimming a 1:05.02 while Alarcia finished with a 58.34 to round out the day.

The meet continues tomorrow as the teams head to Davidson College. Competition is set to begin at 11 a.m.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The George Washington men's swimming and diving team tallied nine top-three finishes to open the 2016-17 season on the first day of competition of a two-day meet at Queens with Davidson. The Colonials will wrap weekend competition on Saturday morning at Davidson's Charles A. Cannon Pool.

The Colonials trail Queens, 115-51, after the first day of competition and are close behind Davidson, 89-77. 

The Colonials began the meet with a second-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay as the team of junior Gustav Hokfelt, senior Andrea Bolognesi, senior Ben Fitch and freshman Max Forstenhaeusler clocked in at 3:25.00. 

Freshman Alex Cronin then took a second-place finish of his own in the 1,000 free, touching the wall in 9:41.96. In a strong collegiate debut, Cronin went on to place second in the 200 butterfly (1:56.10) just ahead of Fitch in third (1:56.67). Cronin later joined forces with sophomore Josh Monacelli, senior Bogdan Balteanu and Forstenhaeusler to take third in the 800 free relay (7:10.12).

Hokfelt and Bolognesi placed second (50.46) and third (51.88), respectively, in the 100 backstroke. 

Forstenhaeusler and sophomore Alexander Auster rounded out GW's top performances with third place finishes in the 200 free (1:43.98) and 50 free (21.45), respectively. 

The Colonials return to the pool to wrap the two-day season-opening meet at Davidson at 11 a.m. 

The George Washington women's swimming & diving team opened 2016-17 with four first-place finishes at Queens in the first portion of a two-day quad meet with Davidson and UNC-Asheville at the Levine Center. The Colonials will finish the season-opening meet on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at Davidson's Charles A. Cannon Pool. 

The Colonials lead UNC-Asheville, 102-64, and Davidson, 89-77, after the first day of competition. Two-time defending Division II champion Queens holds a 99-67 advantage over GW. 

Sophomore Lucy Castro logged GW's first win of the day, finishing first in the 1,000 freestyle in 10:35.37. Classmate Emily Zhang later posted a top finish in the 200 IM (2:06.73) and freshman Jackie Torrez won the 200 butterfly to wrap GW's top individual finishes of the day. Torrez logged a time of 2:06.30 to jump into fifth on GW's all-time top 10 list in her collegiate debut. 

In relay action, the team of freshman Gemma Atherley, senior Lauren Law, junior Abigail Fusco and Emily Zhang won the 800 free relay in 7:45.49 for GW's fourth and final top finish of the day. The Colonials grabbed a fourth-place finish in the 400 medley relay with Fusco, Torrez, Law and Emily Zhang (3:57.66).

Emily Zhang added a third-place finish in the 200 free (1:54.25) to her strong day and was followed closely by Atherley in fourth (1:55.61).

Fusco also performed well on Friday evening in her individual events, grabbing second in the 100 backstroke (58.54) and third in the 50 free (24.32). 

The Colonials conclude the two-day season-opening meet on Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
