Purdue Captures Indiana Intercollegiate Titles

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue swimming & diving teams each won 11 of the 12 events to cruise to sizable team wins at the largest home meet of the fall, the annual Indiana Intercollegiates featuring nine universities from the around the state.

The Purdue men won every event but the 100 butterfly, finishing the day with 1,038 points in the team scoring. They outscored second-place Ball State by 833.5 points. Steele Johnson (1-meter and 3-meter diving) and Nick McDowell (200 and 500 free) both won a pair of individual events. Johnson posted list scores over 440 points in both springboard events.

The Purdue women were victorious in every event but the 500 freestyle, finishing the day with 861 points in the team scoring. Second-place Ball State was 377 points back. Jackie Smailis won the 50 free and 100 backstroke to lead the way.

Led by the 200 individual medley (top nine), the Purdue men had at least the top four finishers in nine of the 12 events. The Purdue women had the top 10 finishers in the 100 free and at least the top three in four events total.

McDowell won four events during his first weekend of collegiate competition. Kaersten Meitz, Eddy Zawatski (50 free Saturday), Johnson and Smailis all finished the weekend with three individual event wins. Meitz, a distance freestyle specialist, demonstrated her versatility Saturday by winning the 100 free and finishing as the runner-up in the 50 free. She also anchored the 200 medley relay to victory.

Filip Bujoczek (100 free), Hanna House (200 IM), Meagan Lim (100 fly), Jinq En Phee (100 breast) and Smailis joined Meitz as Boilermakers to win an individual event and contribute to a relay winner.

Chris Bals (100 breast), Adam Noens (200 IM) and Alex Toetz (100 back) were also individual event winners for the Purdue men. Emily Converse (200 free), Emily Meaney (3-meter diving) and Samm Reese (1-meter diving) also won events for the Purdue women.

Along with the multiple-event winners, Lim and Meitz headlined the group of Boilermakers that won both of their heats during the meet. Lim won the first heat of the 100 free less than 10 minutes after winning the final heat of the 100 fly. Danielle Auckley (200 IM, 500 free), Alex Close (100 fly, 500 free) and Emmy Rawson (100 and 200 free) also won both of their heats.

Grant Lewis took second as Purdue’s top finisher in the 100 fly and won his heat of the 50 free. Converse coupled her 200 free win with a runner-up showing in the 500 free as the Boilermakers’ top finisher.

Purdue returns to action Friday for a co-ed dual meet at Notre Dame. The women will also compete against Miami (Fla.) and Rutgers in South Bend. Action gets underway at 5 p.m.
