Miami Downs Xavier in Oxford

Miami swept Xavier today in Oxford with two clear-cut victories.

OXFORD, Ohio – Miami University’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams conquered the Xavier Musketeers on Saturday afternoon in the Corwin Nixon Aquatic Center.

The RedHawks women won handily 180-82 and the men by a score of 155-107.

Izzy Herb had a stellar day for the Red & White, winning the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.64) and the 200-yard butterfly by three seconds (2:05.81). Miami swept the 200-yard butterfly with Herb, Allison Pierce (2:08.71) and Grace Van Fossen (2.11.32). Herb also teamed up with Stephanie LeMire, Van Fossen, and Abby Stone to win the 200-yard medley relay, clocking in at 1:46.32.

Miami swept the 1000-yard freestyle as well. Ella Moynihan led the way, finishing in 10:10.33, 21 seconds faster than the second-place finisher, Shay Spelman (10:31.24). Sarah Wolanske rounded out the top three with a 10:41.40 time. Moynihan placed second in the 50-yard freestyle (24.48), while Anna Justinak came in third (24.83)

Spelman led the way on a 1-2-3 finish in the 500-yard freestyle (5:07.78), with Julia Campbell (5:09.71) and Sarah Wolanske (5:12.47) coming in second and third, respectively.
The third sweep of the day came from the team of Hannah Fuchs (2:07.47), Abby Stone (2:08.00) and Carolyn Jungers (2:10.95) in the 200-yard IM.

Peyton Mosbaugh found herself in the winning lane in the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.26), narrowly edging out Stone (1:55.44) for the victory. Mosbaugh also placed second in the 100-yard freestyle, clocking in at 53.50.

Holly Schuster picked up two first-place finishes today, winning both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.05) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.55). Ana Maria Castellanos was behind her in the 100, with a time of 1:07.38. The 200 was swept by the Red & White, with Elise Campbell (2:20.55) and Castellanos (2:24.24) rounding out the top three.

Brittany Dudzinski and Katie Kuhl picked up second and third, respectively, in the 100-yard backstroke, with Dudzinski clocking in at 57.39 and Kuhl in 58.51.

To end the day, the team of Moynihan, Claire Doerr, Elise Campbell, and Stone won the 800-yard freestyle relay, with a time of 7:46.59.

For the men, Nicholas Wukovits continued his success in pool, winning the 100-yard breaststroke (56.39), 200-yard breaststroke (2:08.28) and 200-yard IM (1:56.82). The freshman also teamed up with James Wray, Rob Newman and Lucas Brock to win the 200-yard medley relay (1:33.14)

Jake Precious found himself in the win column twice. He won the 200-yard backstroke, finishing in 1:52.52. He also took gold in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:49.34), with Ross Rybakowicz behind him in second (9:56.19)

Justin Andrews was the other men’s member of the Red & White with two individual wins, taking the 500-yard freestyle in 4:44.46. He also led the way in the 200-yard freestyle, winning with a time of 1:42.08. Ross Westrick picked up a second-place finish in the event (1:43.83).

Wray picked up a win of his own in the 100-yard backstroke, clocking in at 50:46. Jack Strauss cracked the top three with a third-place finish (53.34)

Rob Newman took silver in two events, the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard butterfly. In the 100, he finished in 50.90 seconds. In the 200, the sophomore clocked in at 1:56.21, with Chase Bettner finishing in third (1:59.33).

Lucas Brock placed second in the 50-yard freestyle (21.16), with Westrick behind him, clocking in third (21.73). Nick Ward also finished second in an event, doing so in the 100-yard freestyle (47.01).

The men’s 800-yard freestyle relay ended with a win for the Red & White. Brock, Westrick, Wray and Andrews led the way, finishing in 6:56.34.

The RedHawk women will be back in the pool on Saturday, Oct. 29, as they take on Bowling Green and Marshall in a tri-meet at 1 p.m. at home. The men will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 12, when the men and women head to Ohio State.
