Tampa Sweeps Florida Southern

Tampa downed Florida Southern in a pair of dual meets on Friday.

• UT won seven of the 11 events, including the freestyle relay. FSC claimed the remaining four men's events.

• The Spartan men claimed their first win over the Mocs since the 2011-12 season behind a strong showing from senior Martin Hammer. The sprinter claimed two individual events and added a win in the freestyle relay.

• Hammer recorded top finishes in three events. The senior paced the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 20.70 a Division II B cut standard. He also the 100 yard freestyle behind a time of 46.55 before combining with Stefano Vrolijk, Aaron James and Bryan Mattingly to win the 400 yard freestyle relay with a 3:09.50 time.

• Christian Berg won the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 1:54.70

• Distance swimmers Tommy Reminger and Tomas Manso-Fraga each tallied a win, as Reminger took the 1000 yard freestyle in 9:48.88 while Manso-Fraga won the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:44.92.

• Freshman Brett Saunders won the 400 yard individual medley with a  time of 4:10.08 in his collegiate debut. 

• UT claimed six first-place performances.

• The Spartans had two of three finishers in the top three in seven races.

• The 200 Backstroke resulted in a 1-2-3 sweep for Spartan swimmers.

• The Spartan women have now won two of the last three against Florida Southern, with last season's meeting resulting in a 131-131 tie.

• Brittany Bayes won the 1,000 Free in 10:47.20, nearly five seconds faster than teammate and second-place finisher Ali Lombardi.

• Senior Marisa Barton continued her success with a first-place finish in the 50 Free. She finished with a time of 24.45. Barton also won the 100 Free in 52.92.

• Izzy Spalding won the 200 Fly with a time of 2:12.33. Teammate Nelly Hansson was third in the 200.

• Sophomore Brittany Murphy finished first in the 200 Back, with a time of 2:11.33.  Fellow Spartans Catherine Bayes and Aubrey Hillborn followed Murphy as the Spartans took the top three spots.

• The Spartans finished the meet with a first-place finish in the 400 Free Relay. Molly O'Hara, Megan Waddell, Courtney Markle and Torey Brierley won with a time of 3:38.80.

TAMPA, Fla. – Sophomore Sean Kim and newcomer Noah Franz each picked up individual wins and also helped Florida Southern win one of the two relays, and senior Antonio Nunez-Alvarezposted a solo win as well though Tampa took four of the final five races to pull away for a 123-82 season-opening win over the Moccasins.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Florida Southern started the meet with a win in the 400-medley relay behind Kim, Franz, and seniors Evan Coleman and Diego Gimenez. Kim was on the breaststroke portion and Franz anchored on the freestyle leg. The Mocs also saw their second team of freshmanTalor Hamilton, sophomore Matthew Holmes, Nunez-Alvarez and junior Luka Matacin nearly finish ahead of the Spartans' top team too.

The two teams were tied 37-37 with four events in the books before Tampa won four of the next five to pull away from Florida Southern.

Franz, a junior transfer from North Carolina State University, won the 200-freestyle in his first individual race for the Moccasins and later finished second in the 100-freestyle.

Kim won the 200-breaststroke, which was the final individual race of the night.

Nunez-Alvarez notched his win in the 200-butterfly.

The Moccasins took first and second in two different races. The first was the 200-free where Franz finished ahead of sophomore Nico Campbell by 1.02 seconds. The second such race was the 200-breast where the Mocs actually took three of the top four spots behind Kim (first), Holmes (second) and Nunez-Alvarez (fourth).

Sophomore Luka Planinc had runner-up finishes in both distance events, the 1,000-free and the 500-free, and was just 1.3 seconds behind Tampa's Tomas Manso-Fraga in the 500.

Gimenez placed second in the 50-freestyle in addition to being part of the winning 400-medley relay team.

Florida Southern's top swimmer in the in the 400-IM was Matacin, a transfer from Drury, and their top swimmer in the 200-backstroke was Hamilton, a freshman from Ellsworth, Maine.

Both Florida Southern and Tampa had teams DQ'd in the 400-freestyle relay in the final race. 

TAMPA, Fla. – Two members of Florida Southern's junior class, Peyton Breault and Jacinda Whittenburg, got off to a strong start Friday night with a pair of individual wins, and sophomoreKrystal Karas had two runner-up finishes, but the FSC women's swimming team fell to the University of Tampa, 118-87.

Florida Southern won three of the first five races Friday night and trailed by only three points, but Tampa won the next three to take control of the meet.

The Moccasins then won back-to-back races before the Spartans took the finale for the final margin.

Breault won the 200-freestyle and 500-freestyle in her only individual races and also swam the backstroke leg for the Moccasins' winning 400-medley relay team, which defeated Tampa by 1.57 seconds. That relay was the first race of the meet and gave the Mocs a split in the two relays contested with the Spartans later taking the 400-freestyle relay.

Whittenburg took the 400-IM and 200-breaststroke as an individual and was on the breaststroke portion of the Mocs' second 400-medley relay team that finished third with a 2.68-second margin over Tampa's #2 team.

Karas helped the Mocs' 400-medley team to its meet opening win by swimming the butterfly leg, then went on to finish second in the two sprints, the 50- and 100-freestyle, behind Tampa All-American Marisa Barton.

The Moccasins also got a runner-up finish from senior Kourtney Gavin in the 200-butterfly, and its 40-freestyle relay team that featured freshman Allison Greenwood, junior Britt Aubley, senior Leah Haney and junior Allie Kaufmann.

Florida Southern had two of the top three swimmers in the 200-free (Breault and Haney), the 50-free (Karas and sophomore Rebeka Dics) and the 200-breast (Whittenburg and sophomore Haley DeGrace).

Senior Madi Rowan was the Mocs' top swimmer in the 1,000-freestyle, placing fourth.

Breault won two races against Tampa for the second year in a row, as did Whittenburg. Breault won two backstroke events last year before taking two freestyle events this year. Whittenburg won the 200-breast and 200-IM last year.

This marked the 13th year in a row Florida Southern's first dual meet of the season was against Tampa.
