Boston College Leads After Day One of Northeast Catholic Invitational

Boston College took a day one lead at the Northeast Catholic Invitational on Friday.

After day one, Saint Francis sits in second place with 293 points, with Boston College in first with 334 points. Assumption College is in third with 183 points, followed by Providence (133), Holy Cross (74), Siena (46) and Merrimack (22).

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Saint Francis swimming team had a strong start to the Northeast Catholic Invitational, hosted by Boston College, on Friday night. The Red Flash had first place finishers in four of the five events, including three meet records. SFU won both of the relay events on Friday and had two winners in individual events.

After day one, Saint Francis sits in second place with 293 points, with Boston College in first with 334 points. Assumption College is in third with 183 points, followed by Providence (133), Holy Cross (74), Siena (46) and Merrimack (22).

The meet began with the Red Flash earning the top spot in the 200-yard Freestyle Relay. Junior Alicia Tiberino (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill), freshman Aimee Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn), junior Natalie Tedjasukmana (Anaheim, Calif./Mater Dei) and freshman Karilyn Quon (Tempe, Ariz./Corona del Sol) combined for the event's top time, 1:38.94. 

Saint Francis also had a relay team finish seventh in the 200-yard Freestyle Relay. The team of freshman Emily Graziano (Jeannette, Pa./Penn Trafford), Kristen Toth (Silver Spring, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti), senior Paige McLean (Bolton, Ontario/St. Michael Catholic Secondary) and sophomore Amanda Crnic (Conway, Ark./Conway) posted a time of 1:43.54.

The Red Flash ended the meet by also winning the 400-yard Medley Relay. The combination of Baur, freshman Erin O'Neill (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn), freshman Sabrina Bowman (Vandergrift, Pa./Saint Joseph's) and junior Katie Lafferty (Bremen, Ind./Bremen) set a new meet record, with a time of 3:58.15. That bested the previous record time of 4:02.15, set by Boston College in 2015. SFU's time is also the 10th-best in program history.

Quon earned a win in the 500-yard Freestyle, setting a meet record with a time of 5:08.49. The SFU rookie bested the time of 5:09.30 set by Providence's Katherine Fallon in 2016.

In the 500-yard Freestyle, McLean picked up a fourth-place finish with a time of 5:17.54. Baur finished eighth, with a pace of 5:21.66, while Graziano placed 10th, with a time of 5:24.01.

Lafferty established a new meet record in the 50-yard Freestyle to earn first place in that event. The junior finished with a time of 24.12. That bettered the record time of former teammate Jessica Reilly (24.37 in 2015).

In the 50-yard Freestyle, Bowman also claimed a Top Three finish, picking up third place, with a time of 24.90.

Tiberino earned an eighth-place finish in the event, with a time of 25.32, while O'Neill finished just behind Tiberino, with a pace of 25.33.

Junior Emma Karell (Norrtlje, Sweden/Tby Swim Club) placed second in the 200-yard IM, with a time of 2:13.86. Toth also finished in the Top Five, with a time of 2:15.87 to finish fifth.

Sophomore Marisa Daly (Wallingford, Conn./Mark T. Sheehan) claimed 12th place in the 200-yard IM, with a pace of 2:17.08, while freshman Laura Patrick (Lake Charles, La./St. Louis Catholic) came in 13th, with a time of 2:17.14.
