Marist picked up a pair of wins against Canisius on Friday

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist men’s swimming and diving team showed its depth in a 168-130 victory over Canisius to open the 2016-17 season on Oct. 14 in McCann Natatorium.

Junior Robert McDowell, sophomore Edward Oser, senior Manuel Garcia and sophomore Daniel Knoll began the meet with a first place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. Garcia also swam the third leg on the Red Foxes’ 400-yard freestyle relay squad that clocked in at the fastest time. 

Individually, McDowell posted a pair of second place finishes in close 100- (53.49 seconds) and 200-yard (1:57.18) backstroke races. Garcia won the 100-yard butterfly in 52.54 seconds. Oser led a 1-2 Marist finish in the 200-yard breaststroke when junior Sam Presgraves touched fewer than three seconds later. Knoll placed first in the 50- (21.91 seconds) and 100-yard (47.73 seconds) freestyle events.

Sophomores Mark Miller and Riley Stadel cemented the Marist win late in the meet with a 1-2 finish in the 200-yard IM. They completed the event in 1:58.88 and 2:02.49 respectively.

On the diving boards, junior Peter Gallino finished second at one meter (288.00 points) and third at three meters (265.57 points). In his collegiate debut, freshman Raislan Aiken racked up 232.12 points and 237.00 points on the 1- and 3-meter boards.

The Red Foxes will compete in their first non-conference dual meet of the season at Fordham at 6 p.m. Oct. 20.

The Marist women’s swimming and diving team cruised past Canisius, 169-126, in the 2016-17 season opener Oct. 14 in McCann Natatorium.

Senior Meredith Wurtz anchored a pair of relay squads that registered the fastest times in the meet. The Red Foxes’ 200-yard medley relay squad came in first place by .30 seconds and the 400-yard freestyle relay team ended the meet by clocking in at 3:40.24. Wurtz also dominated at short distances, winning the 50- (24.77 seconds) and 100-yard (53.86 seconds) freestyle.

In other individual performances, senior Isabella Morreale was the top finisher in the 100- (1:07.41) and 200-yard (2:26.42) breaststroke. Freshman Jessica Miller was a double-winner in the butterfly, clocking in at 1:01.02 in the 100-yard event and 2:12.24 at 200 yards. Senior Sarah Mosca came in right behind Miller with times of 1:02.15 and 2:15.35 respectively.      

Junior Megan Berardelli was the highest finisher on both boards, posting 254.25 points at one meter and 269.70 points at three meters. Sophomore Lauren Katz placed second at one meter (240.07 points) and third at three meters (234.90 points).

The Red Foxes will compete at Fordham in their first non-conference dual meet of the season. The meet will begin at 6 p.m. Oct. 20.
