Michigan Sweeps Louisville in Unorthodox Meet

With a meet schedule decided by the roll of dice, Michigan picked up a pair of dual meet triumphs against Louisville at home.

Michigan Press Release

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team extended its dual-meet winning streak to 53, sweeping Louisville in its best-of-three series by winning sessions two (285-187) and three (283-188) on Saturday (Oct. 8) inside Canham Natatorium. The "tripleheader" format featured a roll of the dice twice during each session to determine the distance of the events.

Eight student-athletes won individual events: junior Paul Powers in the 50-yard freestyle (20.00), freshman Felix Auböck in the 500-yard freestyle (4:24.66), junior PJ Ransford in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:10.40), freshman Jacob Montague in the 100-yard breaststroke (54.68), senior Vinny Tafuto in the 100-yard butterfly (48.55), senior Chris Klein in the 200-yard IM (1:49.95), freshman Charlie Swanson in the 400-yard IM (3:51.37) and sophomore Collin DeShaw in the three-meter diving competition (346.42). The tandem of Jake Herremans and Allie Murphy added a win in mixed synchronized diving (241.80).

Session II
For the second consecutive session, U-M dominated the distance freestyle event, holding the top four spots on the podium. Behind Ransford was Auböck (9:16.21), senior Cameron Stitt (9:19.68) and sophomore Blake Maczka (9:22.30). The Wolverines also went 1-2-3 in the 200-yard IM with Klein, and freshmen Charlie Swanson (1:50.05) and Montague (1:50.73).

Earlier, Montague cruised to victory in the 100-yard breaststroke, beating Carlos Claverie, a Venezuelan Olympian, by nearly a second, surpassing the NCAA 'B' time. Another freshman, Miles Smachlo, had a nice performance in the 200-yard butterfly, going toe-to-toe with Louisville's Zach Harting, an Olympic Trials finalist in the same event. Smachlo held the lead at the 150 but was out-touched at the finish, taking second (1:49.34).

Arguably the best performance of the morning came from DeShaw, as the sophomore surpassed his previous career best on the three-meter board by nearly 50 points to secure his first career individual event win.

Back in the pool, the quartet of Tristan Sanders, Montague, Tafuto and Powers won the 200-yard medley to open the session (1:28.49), with Powers closing in 19.74 to clinch the win. The Wolverines bunched up points with 2-3-4 finishes in the 400-yard freestyle relay, the 100-yard freestyle (Powers, James Jones, Tafuto) and the 100-yard backstroke (Sanders, Luke Papendick, Alex Martin).

Session III
In the 500-yard freestyle, the roles were reversed from the morning, with Auböck finishing ahead of Ransford (4:28.81) and Stitt (4:29.47). Tafuto capped off a solid weekend with a win in the 100-yard butterfly, going 1-2 with Smachlo (48.99). The other winner on the afternoon was Powers in the 50-yard freestyle, though he'd go a tick faster on the relay later in the meet.

One of the more eye-opening performances came from Swanson, who blew away the field in the 400-yard IM, winning by over six seconds. Sophomore Stephen Holmquist finished behind him in second (3:57.72).

The team's freshman class has plenty of breaststrokers and it showed in the 200-yard breaststroke, with Montague (second, 2:00.62), Swanson (2:01.09) and Tommy Cope (fourth, 2:02.04) all recording top-five finishes. Senior Chris Klein was also in there, finishing fourth (2:01.96). The Wolverines also got a 2-3-4 finish in the 50-yard backstroke courtesy of Sanders (22.83), Martin (23.03) and Papendick (23.07).

The Wolverines split a pair of relays, winning the 200-yard freestyle (1:20.42) -- which included an opening 19.89 split from Powers -- and finishing second in the 400-yard medley relay (3:15.29).

The men's team returns to the pool in two weeks (Saturday, Oct. 22) for the program's annual alumni/intrasquad meet in conjunction with Homecoming Weekend. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. inside Canham Natatorium.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team completed a sweep of Louisville in its best-of-three series, winning sessions two (274-196) and three (266-205) on Saturday (Oct. 8) inside Canham Natatorium. The "tripleheader" format featured a roll of the dice twice during each session to determine the distance of the events.

Sophomore Yirong Bi was the meet's big winner, taking a trio of events -- the 500-yard freestyle (4:44.98), the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:43.82) and the 400-yard IM (4:19.66). Two of the DeLoof sisters won events -- sophomore Catie DeLoof in the 100-yard freestyle (49.32) and older sister, junior Gabby DeLoof, in the 100-yard backstroke (54.64).

Sophomore Siobhán Haughey cruised to a victory in the 200-yard IM (1:59.68), winning the event by nearly four seconds over the field. Freshman Vanessa Krause added to the bounty with a first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (54.43).

In the diving well, freshman Kristen Hayden won the one-meter springboard (241.80), while the tandem of Jake Herremans and Allie Murphy took the mixed synchronized diving competition (241.80).

Session II
After two wins last night, Bi stayed hot on Saturday, running away with the 1,000-yard freestyle. She lapped nearly the entire field, winning by a whopping 22-second margin. Junior G Ryan finished behind Bi in second (10:05.13), with sophomore Katie Duggan coming in third (10:11.87).

Hayden finished off a clean sweep of the springboard events in her collegiate debut, headlining a 1-2 finish on the one-meter board along with senior Keegan McCaffrey (268.42). Both divers surpassed the minimal NCAA Zone Diving qualifying standard.

One of the morning's better races came in the 100-yard freestyle, as Catie DeLoof got to the wall first (49.32), just ahead of Louisville's Mallory Comerford (49.34), a U.S. Junior National Team member. In the following race, just like in last night's 100-yard backstroke, U-M went 1-2-3 with the same swimmers, albeit in a different order: Gabby DeLoof, junior Clara Smiddy (55.04) and freshman Jacqui Schafer (55.73).

Elsewhere, U-M went 2-3-4-5 in the 100-yard breaststroke (Emily Kopas, Jamie Yeung, Millie Macdonald, Madison Horton) and 3-4-5 in the 200-yard butterfly (Astrid Swensen, Krause, Ryan).

The Wolverines won the 400-yard freestyle relay by nearly five seconds (3:19.59), with Catie DeLoof splitting 49.88 on the opening leg to give U-M a lead it wouldn't relinquish. Haughey closed in 50.31, but appeared to shut it down over the last 25 yards, as she had built up a lead of several body-lengths. They also went 2-3-4 in the 200-yard medley relay.

Session III
The Wolverines opened the afternoon session with a win in the 400-yard medley relay, as the tandem of Gabby DeLoof, Kopas, Krause and Haughey touched at 3:39.88.

Bi led the charge in the 500-yard freestyle, though U-M also picked up key points from Ryan (4:49.14) and sophomore Becca Postoll (4:51.02) with second- and third-place finishes.

Krause showed great fight in the 100-yard butterfly, beating Louisville's Abbie Houck to the wall for the win (54.43). The other winner was, once again, Bi, who looked easy in her conquest of the 400-yard IM. But like in the 500-yard freestyle from earlier, U-M followed her closely to the wall, with Kopas taking second (4:24.88) and Postoll finishing third (4:25.69).

Depth was evident in other races in which U-M didn't win, as it went 2-3 in both the 200-yard breaststroke (Kopas, Yeung) and 50-yard freestyle (Haughey, Catie DeLoof), and 2-3-4 in the 50-yard backstroke (Schafer, Gabby DeLoof, Emily Eastin).

The Wolverines put an exclamation point on a fantastic weekend with a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay, which included Catie DeLoof, Haughey, Postoll and Gabby DeLoof (1:31.87).

Eight swimmers and one diver will represent the women's team at the SMU Classic next weekend (Fri.-Sat., Oct. 14-15) at the Westside Aquatic Center in Lewisville, Texas. Joining Michigan and SMU in the six-team competition will be Miami, USC, UCLA and Louisville. Both sessions will start at 6:30 p.m

The meet was held using an innovative format. Each session  consisted of nine events for men and women: six individual (distance freestyle, butterfly, breaststroke, sprint freestyle, backstroke, individual medley), two relays (freestyle, medley) and one diving event. Before warm-up, the distance for each of the swimming events were chosen at random and coaches had to make their entries on the spot. Swimmers were entered in three events with a maximum of two individual events. The same process was done for the second and third sessions with the remaining distances.
