Queens Claims Another Set Of Wins Over Davidson, George Washington, UNC-Asheville

Queens swept the weekend against Davidson, George Washington and UNC-Asheville with wins the past two days.  Meanwhile, George Washington picked up a pair of women's wins, while Davidson's women took down Asheville as well.

DAVIDSON, N.C- The Queens University of Charlotte men’s and women’s swim teams tallied 12 event wins in the second day of competition against Davidson College, George Washington University, and the women’s swim team from UNC-Asheville. The Royals concluded the meet on Saturday, October 01, 2016, with dual competition wins in all five of their matchups.

The men’s team topped Davidson 220-120 at the end of the two day event. They would also defeat George Washington 222-92.

The women saw a 201-145 victory over Davidson. Against George Washington, the team secured the win with a score of 200-143 while they went 228-86 against UNC-Asheville.

The start of day two provided Queens a first place swim from the women’s 200 yard medley relay. Hannah Peiffer, Shelly Prayson, Alexandra Marshall, and Kyrie Dobson, respectively, swam a 1:44.36 for the event victory.

The men’s team also notched the win in the 200 yard medley relay with Paul Pijulet, Nicholas Arakelian, Enzo Pazos, and Ben Mayes, respectively, touching for a time of 1:32.54.

In the men’s 500 yard freestyle Dion Dreesens added a first place swim to his weekend. With a near five second gap, Dreesens took first with a time of 3:37.78.

Peiffer swam a 2:05.27 in the women’s 200 yard backstroke to add to the team’s tally while Pijulet secured the men’s side of the event with a time of 1:48.29.

Claiming both sides of the event, Dasha Talanova swam a 2:21.38 for first place in the women’s 200 yard breaststroke. Arakelian touched with a 2:06.34 to claim the men’s event. Inigo Alarcia closed out the event after coming into the wall in second place with a time of 2:07.98.

It was a 1-2 finish in the women’s 100 yard freestyle as McKenzie Stevens clocked a 52.47. She was followed by Dobson who swam a 52.95. On the men’s side, Mayes swam a 47.12 to take first in the event.

With the last individual first place swim of the weekend, Arakelian claimed a time of 4:06.63 in the men’s 400 yard individual medley. He would finish to the wall with almost a four second gap.

The weekend concluded with back-to-back wins in the 400 yard freestyle relay. The women’s victory was claimed by Stevens, Dobson, Prayson, and Marshall, respectively. The four would touch with a 3:31.36. The men’s team of Dreesens, Mayes, Pijulet, and Arakelian, respectively, swam a 3:04.59 to close out the day.

The Royals will travel to Emory University on October 22 for their next meet. The competition is set to begin at 1 p.m.

DAVIDSON, N.C. - The George Washington women's swimming and diving squad wrapped a two-day season-opening meet with a pair of victories on Saturday at Davidson's Charles A. Cannon Pool. The Colonials notched wins over the host Wildcats and UNC-Asheville. 

The Buff and Blue edged Atlantic 10 foe Davidson, 176.50-175.50, and downed UNC-Asheville, 230-116. The Colonials fell to two-time Division II champion Queens, 200-146. Overall in the two-day contest the Colonials tallied five first-place finishes. 

Freshman Jackie Torrez finished a stellar career-opening meet with a victory in the 400 IM (4:33.54) and a second-place finish in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.25). Her time in the 400 IM puts her ninth on GW's all-time top 10 list. Sophomore Emily Zhang placed third in that same event (4:37.81).

Emily Zhang posted another second-place finish when she teamed up with seniors Lauren Law and Selin Ozturk and freshman Lynn Zhang in the 400 freestyle relay (3:33.81). 

Freshman Gemma Athlerley and sophomore Miranda Simon added runner-up finishes of their own, as Atherley touched the wall in 2:08.30 in the 200 backstroke and Simon tallied 217.20 points on the 3-meter boards.

Simon continued a strong day with a score of 221.85 on the 1-meter boards to take third. Junior Iman Lee (192.45) and freshman Gilliam Chowske (171.68) placed fourth and fifth, respectively. Lee's score marked a new personal best. 

Ozturk wrapped GW's top performances, tallying a pair of third-place finishes in the 500 free (5:13.00) and 100 free (53.76).

"This weekend will definitely be a good learning experience for our program," said second-year head coach James Winchester. "The early season competitions give us the opportunity to assess our weaknesses and put us in a stronger position for success down the road."

The Colonials return to the pool on Saturday, Oct. 8, in the squad's home opener against Rider at the Charles E. Smith Center.

The Colonials fell to Davidson, 190-150, and to two-time defending Division II champion Queens, 222-92.

"This weekend will definitely be a good learning experience for our program, and our men will have to rebound from a tough loss," said second-year head coach James Winchester. "The early season competitions give us the opportunity to assess our weaknesses and put us in a stronger position for success down the road."

Senior Ben Fitch led the Buff and Blue on Saturday with his first-place performance in the 100 butterfly, touching the wall in 51.82. Fitch also helped the Colonials to a pair of second-place relay performances. In the 200 medley relay, Junior Gustav Hokfelt, senior Andrea Bolognesi, Fitch and sophomore Alexander Auster posted a time of 1:34.62 to take a second-place finish. Later, freshman Max Forstenhaeusler, Auster, Fitch and Hokfelt touched the wall in 3:09.66 in the 400 freestyle relay to take second. 

Hokfelt and Forstenhaeusler also tallied runner-up finishes individually with strong performances in the 200 backstroke (1:55.29) and 100 free (47.70), respectively. 

Freshman Alex Cronin wrapped GW's top performances on Saturday with his third-place finish in the 500 free with a time of 4:46.21.

The Colonials return to the pool on Saturday, Oct. 8, in the squad's home opener against Rider at the Charles E. Smith Center.
