Queens Dominating Wingate Fall Frenzy

Queens pushed out to big leads at the Wingate Fall Frenzy.

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte women's swim team continued to lead the Fall Frenzy after day two of the meet concluded on Saturday, November 19, 2016. The Royals added six more first place swims to the weekend in addition to several swimmers meeting qualify times for the NCAA Championships.
 
"We had some excellent swims tonight on both sides," said Head Coach Jeff Dugdale. "The men are starting to find their identity. The women look strong after a few days rest and their depth is showing. It was great to senior captain walk away with two meet records. Nick Arakelian and Paul Pijulet also set a couple of meet records. Overall two good days of racing."
 
Queens led with 1,319.5 points after the day concluded. Gardner-Webb secured second place with 1,143 points followed by the University North Carolina-Asheville in third with 911.5 points. The meet was rounded out by Wingate with 830 points, Limestone with 494 points, Lenoir-Rhyne with 200 points, St. Andrews with 146 points, and Catawba with 59 points, respectively.
 
Hannah Peiffer, Shelly Prayson, Alexandra Marshall, and Kyrie Dobson, respectively, started the day with a first place swim in the 200 yard medley clocking a time of 1:41.67. Kristina Kosloski, Dasha Talanova, Georgia Dacruz, and Sarah Fountain, respectively, followed with a second place touch, swimming a 1:45.81.
 
Peiffer, DaCruz, and Marshall, went 1-2-3 in the 100 yard butterfly as Peiffer swam a 54.07, "B" Standard. Dacruz followed with a 55.80, "B" Standard, for second place while Marshall tabbed third with a 57.11.
 
McKenzie Stevens led the pool in the 200 yard freestyle. She reached the wall in a time of 1:50.10 as teammate Linda Baron touched moments later with a 1:53.49 for second. Both would claim NCAA "B" Standard marks in the event.
 
Prayson added an individual first place swim, securing the 100 yard breaststroke for the team. She touched with a 1:02.15 to claim an NCAA "B" Standard cut.
 
In her second individual first place finish of the night, Peiffer clocked a 54.60 for the 100 yard backstroke. Her time was just shy of claiming an "A" Standard cut in the event.
 
The night ended with both Royal relay teams reaching the top of the 800 yard freestyle relay. The team of Josfina Lorda-Taylor, Stevens, Dobson, and DaCruz, respectively, grabbed the event with a time of 7:30.40. Sarah Reamy, Baron, Hannah Craig, and Kathryn Johnston, respectively, reached the wall with a time of 7:36.81 for silver.


CHARLOTTE-N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte men’s swim team added to their successful meet with six first place swim on day two of the Fall Frenzy. As the second day concluded on Saturday, November 19, 2016, the Royals extend their lead in the meet adding a NCAA automatic qualifying times.

Queens tallied 1,431 points at the end of two days to hold their spot at the top of the meet. Gardner-Webb secured second place grabbing 928 points. Limestone would place third with 867 followed by Wingate with 830.5, Catawba with 412.5, Lenoir-Rhyne with 381, and St. Andrews with 292, respectively.
 
Zach Bunner, Ben Mayes, Paul Pijulet, and Mitchell Harwood, respectively, took a first place swim to start the meet, clocking a 1:28.62 for the event.
 
The Royals secured the top three finishes in the 400 yard individual medley with Nicholas Arakelian grabbing the top swim with a 3:48.17, “A” Standard time. Inigo Alarcia secured second place with a 4:03.00, “B” Standards, while Hector Tricas took third with a time of 4:03.09.
 
In the 100 yard butterfly, Pijulet led the way earning the top swim and reaching the wall in a time of 46.93. His time qualified for an NCAA “A” cut and maintain his position at the top of the NCAA in the event.
 
Dion Dreesens found a first place finish in the night’s events, topping the 200 yard freestyle. He would clock a 1:36.58 to secure a “B” Standard mark and post the top time in the nation for the event.
 
Pijulet swam a 47.70 in the 100 yard backstroke for first place. His time was just five-tenths of a second shy of an automatic qualify spot in the NCAA Championships.
 
The team of Arakelian, Dreesens, Mayes, and Parker Cook-Weeks, respectively, added one last first place swim to the Royals tally, going 6:38.57 in the 800 yard freestyle relay to claim the event by 11 seconds.
 
The Royals will conclude the Fall Frenzy tomorrow.

Charlotte, N.C.----Both Wingate University swimming teams remain in fourth place after two days of the Fall Frenzy Invitational at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in downtown Charlotte Saturday. Eight schools are competing in this year's event (Saturday's finals, Saturday's PM time trials). The nationally-ranked Wingate Bulldog teams host the annual Fall Frenzy Invitational.

WINGATE WOMEN

Bulldog sophomore Hanna Van Horen (Hofstade, Belgium) continues her solid Fall Frenzy Invitational with her third-place showing in the 200 Freestyle, thanks to her time of 1:53.61. WU senior Academic All-America Vika Arkhipova (Seversk, Russia) matched Van Horen's bronze medal in one of her specialties, the 100 Backstroke. Her time was 56.74. WU junior Alex Divelbiss (Pueblo, Colo.) earned a fourth-place finish in the 400 Individual Medley final with her time of 4:30.13.

Two Wingate student-athletes competed in the 100 Breaststroke finals. Senior Jessika Weiss (Macon, Ga.) was fifth (1:05.21), while graduate student Olga Kosheleva (Yekaterinburg, Russia) was seventh (1:06.30). Bulldog junior Marinela Procopii (Hickory, N.C.) won the 100 Breaststroke "C" final with her time of 1:10.10.

Counting Procopii's 100 Breaststroke "C" final victory, the Navy Blue and Vegas Gold-clad Bulldogs collected four consolation final triumphs. Junior Mariona Espinalt (Barcelona, Spain) won the 100 Backstroke "B" final with a time of 59.34, while freshman Ebba Stillman (Huskvarna, Sweden) touched first in the "C" final for the same event (1:00.71). Wingate freshman Abby Kosic (West Chester, Pa.) won the "C" final in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 1:56.58.

The Bulldogs earned two fourth-place showings in the Saturday relay events. Arkhipova, Kosheleva, Van Horen and senior Caitlin Coughlin (Cochranville, Pa.) started the evening with a 1:47.62 time in the 200 Medley Relay. In the Saturday-concluding 800 Freestyle Relay, Divelbiss, Kosic, Van Horen and freshman Ashlynn Weissgerber (Trussville, Ala.) posted a time of 7:45.50.

Queens University of Charlotte leads the Fall Frenzy with 1319.5 points. The defending NCAA Division II national champion Royals are followed by Gardner-Webb (1143), UNC Asheville (911.5), Wingate (830), Limestone (494), Lenoir-Rhyne (200), St. Andrews (146) and Catawba (59).

WINGATE MEN

Wingate senior Leif-Henning Klüver (Risum-Lindholm, Germany) earned a sixth-place finish in the grueling 400 Individual Medley with his time of 4:07.50. Freshman Giacomo Viazzo (Lonato del Gardo, Italy) gave Bulldog fans a glimpse of the future, touching first in the 400 IM "C" final with his time of 4:13.85.

Bulldog redshirt junior Sebastian Holmberg (Njutånger, Sweden) was sixth in the 100 Butterfly final (50.05), while redshirt sophomore Lennart Queiss (Langen, Germany) was seventh in the 200 Freestyle (1:43.96). Both Holmberg and Queiss played a role as Wingate posted two fourth-place relay finishes.

In the 200 Medley Relay, Holmberg swam the third leg as Wingate put a time of 1:33.50 on the books. The Catawba College transfer was joined (in order of appearance) by sophomore Niklas Martin (Kempton, Germany), freshman Leo Zabudkin (Frankfurt, Germany) and senior team captain Mehdi Zeraidi (Brussels, Belgium).

Queiss swam the anchor leg on the 800 Freestyle Relay quartet (6:56.68) with Klüver and freshmen Niclas Geyer (Wünschendorf, Germany) and Ben Evans (Dover, England) serving as his wing men. On the men's team leader board, defending national champion Queens is first with 1431 points. Gardner-Webb (928), Limestone (867), Wingate (830.5) and Catawba (412.5) round out the top five. Lenoir-Rhyne is next with 381 points, while St. Andrews is seventh with 292 points.

The three-day Wingate University Fall Frenzy Invitational concludes Sunday. The third-day preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. The Sunday finals will start at 5 p.m.

Catawba Press Release

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Catawba continued action at the Wingate Fall Frenzy Swim Meet on Saturday at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center. Aly Hegazi posted Catawba's best finish of the meet as he went fourth in the 200 free in a time of 1:41.95. The men are in fifth place of seven teams with 412.5 points. A short-handed women's team have picked up 59 points.

Hegazi's finish was one spot better than the 200 medley relay team of Dominik Brus, Frederico Borrego Higareda, Joao Barreto and Hegazi, who were fifth with a time of 1:34.53. Higareda, Barreto and Hegazi teamed with Mario Zaninovic to go seventh in the 800 free relay (7:01.76).

Brus would finish 11th in the 100 back (52.24), while Barreto picked up a pair of 12th-place finishes. He had a time of 51.44 in the 100 fly and a time of 59.11 in the 100 breast. Michael King grabbed a win in the 'C' Final of the 200 free (1:47.78), placing 17th. Robert McCue was 24th in the 200 free (1:53.77). Zaninovic took 18th in the 400IM (4:14.15), while Arnold Blohme was 21st in the 100 back (56.29) and 24th in the 100 fly (55.66).

Cassie Shear claimed the best finish for the women. She swam in the 'B' Final of the 100 breast and took 15th with a time of 1:10.09. Jess Daniel had a pair of 'C' Final swims. She placed 20th in the 400IM (5:03.66) and 24th in 100 breast (1:16.44). 

Susanne Reeg and Emily Najar made the 'C' Final of the 100 fly. Reeg was 21st in a time of 1:00.60, while Najar took 22nd with a 1:00.78.

The meet will conclude on Sunday.
