Queens Holds Leads at Wingate Fall Frenzy Invite

Queens turned up the heat at the Wingate Fall Frenzy, capturing leads in both the men's and women's races.

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte men's swim team led the first day of competition in the Fall Frenzy on Friday, November 18, 2016. The Royals posted a score of 600 to take the top score in the day's competition
 
Gardner-Webb would come in second with 412 points as Limestone secured third with 395. Wingate tabbed fourth with 371.5 followed by Catawba with 156.5, St. Andrews with 155, and Lenoir-Rhyne with 150, respectively.   
 
The night ended with a new meet record by Zach Bunner, Nicholas Arakelian, Paul Pijulet, and Dion Dressens, respectively, as they closed out the competition with the fastest swim in the 400 yard medley relay. Their time of 3:13.65 not only qualified for a NCAA "B" Standard cut, but also led the pool by nearly four seconds.
 
The men's team saw a NCAA "B" swim start the competition in taking the top time in the 200 yard freestyle relay. Pijulet, Ben Mayes, Dreesens, and Mitchell Harwood, respectively, swam a 1:21.18 to claim the event.
 
Dreesens, Arakelian, and Hector Tricas found their way to the top of the 500 freestyle with all three claiming NCAA "B" Standard cuts. Dreesens led the event making his way to the wall with a 4:25.77 followed by Arakelian in second place with a 4:25.95. Tricas made his way to the wall in a time of 4:35.76.  Dreesens's swim would place him at the top of NCAA Division II swims for the event.
 
The very next event, the 200 yard individual medley, saw Queens take the top two spots as Inigo Alarcia reach the wall in a time of 1:51.75 for first followed by  Bunner in second place with a time of 1:51.85.
 
The Royals will head back to the pool tomorrow for day two of the Fall Frenzy Meet.

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte women's swim team swept the competition on day one of the Fall Frenzy Swim Meet. The Royals would tally five first place swims and a new pool record during the day's event in addition to placing top in the team standings.
 
Queens scored a 573.5 at the conclusion of the day to push past Gardner-Webb who took second with a score of 481.5. The University of North Carolina-Asheville secured third with a score of 389 followed by Wingate with a 351, Limestone with a 245, Lenoir-Rhyne with a 116, St. Andrews with a 78 and Catawba with a 34, respectively.
 
Queens started the day with a new meet record and a NCAA qualifying mark grabbing a "B" Standard time in the 200 yard Freestyle Relay. Kyrie Dobson, Alexandra Marshall, Kristina Kosloski, and Shelly Prayson, respectively, clocked a 1:33.38 to claim the top swim by over a second.
 
Back-to-back finishes gave the Royals the 500 yard freestyle with McKenzie Stevens taking the top time followed by Sarah Reamy in second place. Stevens and Reamy both secured NCAA “B” Standard times with Stevens touching with a 4:56.38, placing atop the NCAA Division II, while Reamy touched with a 4:57.05.

It was another first place finish for the Royals as Josefina Lorda-Taylor tabbed the top time in the 200 yard individual medley. She swam a 2:03.41 to qualify for an NCAA "B" standard swim.
 
In the 50 yard freestyle, Marshall tabbed an individual first place swim reaching the wall with a time of 23.12 for an NCAA "B" mark. Dobson touched in second also earning a "B" standard with a time of 23.42.
 
The night ended with the Royals claiming the 400 yard medley relay. Hannah Peiffer, Dasha Talanova, Marshall, and Dobson, respectively, clocked a 3:47.38 for first putting a three second gap between them and the pool. The event would also qualify as an NCAA "B" Standard cut.

Charlotte, N.C.----Both Wingate University swimming teams are fourth after the first day of the Fall Frenzy Invitational at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in downtown Charlotte Friday. Eight schools are competing in this year's event. The nationally-ranked Wingate Bulldog teams host the annual Fall Frenzy Invitational.

WINGATE WOMEN

The Bulldogs concluded their evening by finishing third in the 400 Medley Relay with a time of 3:51.22. Wingate's bronze medal-winning quartet includes (in order) senior Academic All-America Vika Arkhipova (Seversk, Russia), senior Jessika Weiss (Macon, Ga.), junior Alex Divelbiss (Pueblo, Colo.) and sophomore Hanna Van Horen (Hofstade, Belgium).

Earlier, Divelbiss claimed sixth place in the 200 Individual Medley with her time of 2:07.91. Weiss won the 200 Individual Medley "B" final with a time of 2:09.83. Divelbiss started her evening by swimming the first leg on the 200 Freestyle Relay, helping Wingate take fifth place (1:37.53). She was joined by senior Caitlin Coughlin (Cochranville, Pa.), Arkhipova and sophomore Maria Madsen (Dragoer, Denmark).

Defending national champion Queens University of Charlotte leads the Fall Frenzy women's competition with 573.5 points. The Royals are followed by Gardner-Webb (481.5), UNC Asheville (389), Wingate (351), Limestone (245), Lenoir-Rhyne (116), St. Andrews (78) and Catawba (34).

WINGATE MEN

Wingate freshman Ben Evans (Dover, England) finished seventh in the 500 Freestyle with his personal-best time of 4:42.40. Bulldog sophomore Nathan Kimbel (Yorktown, Va.) was eighth in the 200 Individual Medley with his 1:57.07 clocking.

The Bulldogs won two "B" finals Friday night. Freshman Giacomo Viazzo (Lonato del Gardo, Italy) touched first with his time of 1:55.80. WU redshirt junior Sebastian Holmberg (Njutanger, Sweden) followed with his victory in the 50 Freestyle, thanks to his time of 21.16.

Senior Mehdi Zeraidi (Brussels, Belgium) was 11th in the 50 Freestyle (21.32), while classmate Leif-Henning Klüver (Risum-Lindholm, Germany) was 12th in the 500 Freestyle (4:42.25). Both Zeraidi and Klüver participated in the 200 Freestyle Relay to open the evening's activites.

On the men's team leader board, defending national champion Queens tops the charts with 600 points. Gardner-Webb (412), Limestone (395), Wingate (371.5) and Catawba (156.5) complete the top five. St. Andrews follows with 155 points, while Lenoir-Rhyne is five markers back at 150.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Catawba began three days of swims at the Wingate Fall Frenzy on Friday. The event is being held through Sunday at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center.

The Catawba men earned several 'B' Final swims with freshman Joao Barreto earned the best finish with a 12th in the 50 free. He posted a finals time of 21.63. Mario Zaninovic was one of two from Catawba in the 'B' Final of the 500 free. He was 13th in a time of 4:43.03. Aly Hegazi was 16th, touching in 4:45.66.

Michael King swam the 'C' Final of the 500 free and 21st with his time of 4:58.64. Frederico Borrego Higareda had a 'C' Final swim in the 200IM. He placed 18th in a time of 1:58.25.

The men's 400 medley relay team swam to an eighth-place finish. The team of Dominik Brus, Higareda, Barreto and Hegazi had a time of 3:28.62.

Amy Cujas had the best swim for the women. She placed 23rd in the 'C' Final of the 50 free with a time of 25.40. Her prelim time of 25 flat was just inside the top 25 times in school history.
