USMMA Sweeps Goucher, Drew

USMMA Men

The USMMA men's swimming and diving team traveled to Drew University on Saturday afternoon for a Landmark Conference tri-meet against the host Rangers and the Gophers of Goucher College. The Mariners grabbed two wins on the day, beating the Rangers, 97-38, and downing the Gophers, 85-52. Merchant Marine improves to 8-2 overall (2-0 Landmark) with the victories.

Senior William Kelsik (New Castle, Ind.) led Merchant Marine with three victories on the afternoon. He was a part of the 200 medley relay team that won to start off the meet in 1:37.53, and then went on to win the 50 freestyle (22.32) and the 500 free (5.01.88).

Junior Stone Hewitt (Destin, Fla.) notched two wins on the day, as part of the 200 MR team and then touching first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 59.08. Senior Gerrit Porter (Houston, Texas), fresh off of earning Landmark Athlete of the Week and ECAC DIII Metro Diver of the Week honors, also grabbed two victories, his coming in the one-meter (255.53) and three-meter (247.73) diving events.

Individually, four other Mariners triumphed on the day – junior Kevin Sweetman (Austin, Texas) won in the 1000 free, clocking in at 10:18.25; junior John Terselic (Tijera, N.M.) touched first in the 200 free with a season-best time of 1:51.57 – Terselic also had season-best times in the 200 individual medley (2:06.27) and the 500 free (5:02.58); junior Karl Sasse (Frederick, Md.) came in first in the 200 breast with his best time of the season (2:10.93); and sophomore Andrew Jackson (Chesapeake, Va.) squeaked in with a victory in the 100 butterfly by two seconds with a time of 54.76.

Also picking up wins on the night were freshman Christopher Khal (Solomons, Md.) and Matheus Macedo (Elk Grove, Calif.) as part of the 200 medley relay squad.

Next up, the Mariner divers will be heading to NYU for the NYU Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 6, beginning at 11 a.m.


USMMA Women

On Saturday, the USMMA women's swim and dive team competed against Drew and Goucher at the Rangers’ F.M. Kirby Pool. The Mariners picked up two victories on the day, beating Drew, 97-43, and the Gophers, 90-50. With the two wins, head coach Sean Tedesco earned his 100th and 101st victories in dual meets for the women’s squad, which improves to 7-1 (2-0 Landmark) on the season.

Junior Jolyn Green (Riverside, Calif.) led Merchant Marine with three victories at the meet. She was a part of the 200 medley relay team that won to start off the day in 1:58.72, and then went on to win the 100 breaststroke (1:13.26) and the 200 breast (2:34.62). Freshman Tyler Wickesberg (Albuquerque, N.M.) grabbed two wins on the day, coming in first in the 200 freestyle (1:37.53) and the 50 free, with a time of 25.37. Both wins were season-bests for Wickesberg.

Three other Mariners also recorded two wins on the day – sophomore Liz Grove (Winchester, Va.) was a part of the 200 MR victory and she also came in first in the 200 individual medley in 2:23.02 – Grove also marked a season-best time in the 200 backstroke in 2:18.94, falling short of first place by four seconds; freshman Ella Sherrill (Ketchikan, Alaska) touched first in the 100 free in 56.29, marking a season-best time, as well as being a part of the 200 MR squad; and junior Blythe Fentress (Shady Shores, Texas) also earned victories in the one meter dive (227.33) and the three meter dive (264.15).

Junior Catherine Don (Quincy, Ill.) also claimed a win on the day, coming in first in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:34.24. Don also came up just one second short in the 100 fly with a time of 1:10.51.

Up next, the Mariner divers will head to NYU in Manhattan on Saturday, Feb. 6, for the NYU Invitational. The event is set to get underway at 11 a.m.
