Royals Open - Day 1

The Queens University of Charlotte men’s and women’s swim teams saw improvement from several swimmers to start day one of the Royals Open. In addition to adding a pool record from the men’s 200 yard relay team, the Royals added three more qualifying swims throughout the day on Friday, February 19, 2016.
 
Queens opened the meet with a pool record securing a 1:20.86 swim for the 200 yard freestyle relay. Brad Hancock, Ben Taylor, Zachary Phelps, and Ben Mayes, respectively, dropped two-hundredths of a second off their previous swim strengthening their NCAA qualifying mark.
 
The Royals captured three new NCAA qualifying times during the day starting with Felipe de Oliveira. Oliveira swam a 49.48 for a 100 yard backstroke split to earn an NCAA “B” standard mark. He would be competing in the 200 yard backstroke when he secured his time. 
 
Josefina Lord-Taylor improved off her 52.67 in the 100 yard freestyle to earn an NCAA “B” standard time of 51.91. Mitch Harwood found the wall in a 46.02 to earn a qualifying time in the men’s 100 yard freestyle, making the cut by two-hundredths of a second.
 
Indigo Alarcia found improvement in the 200 yard individual medley, during the preliminaries, dropping from a 1:48.67 to a 1:48.52 to hold his NCAA “B” standard cut.
 
In the 100 yard breaststroke, Devyn Hughes found his way to the wall with a 54.81, taking two-tenths of a second off his NCAA “B” standard time. He would see a converted 54.61 time in the finals that night for a meter swim in the 100 breaststroke.
 
Hannah Craig found an improving mark in the 400 meter freestyle swim converting her time to a 4.59.01 for the 500 yard freestyle event. Jackson Kojima and Ian Shakely took seconds off their time converting their 400 meter freestyle swims into the NCAA equivalent event of the 500 yard freestyle.  Kojima touched the wall for a 4:34.85 in the 500 freestyle while Shakely took a 4:40.18.
 
Additionally, Mayes saw a converted 54.89 swim for the 100 yard breaststroke and Hector Tricas took a converted 1:51.20 for the 200 yard butterfly during the night’s time trials. Jessica Parmenter swam a 56.87 in the 100 yard butterfly time trial during the morning swims. All three races would qualify for NCAA “B” times.
 
The team will see the water again tomorrow as they enter day two of the Royals Open. The preliminary races will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the finals races at 5 p.m.
