Prior to the weekend, UNC head coach Rich DeSelm explained the purpose of the Carolina Collegiate Invitational as an opportunity for UNC's non-ACC scorers to have a chance to swim fast. A year ago Rachel Canty didn't make the ACC-championship squad, but this weekend she not only made her case, she earned National Collegiate Swimmer-of-the-Week honors. Arizona State's Richard Bohus was the men's award-winner after winning three events, and setting a pair of school records against Arizona.
Canty won three events at the Carolina Collegiate Invitational. The Tarheel Senior won the 200 IM and swept both breaststrokes lifetime bests in all three events. Canty earned 'B' cuts in both events to lead North Carolina against NC State, Duke, James Madison, William & Mary, Virginia Tech, Towson and Old Dominion.
Across the country, Bohus swept the 50- and 100- freestyle events and set school records in both the 100 backstroke and 200 Medley Relay. The swims not only helped the Sun Devils to a 168-132 win over in-state rival Arizona, they marked a latest step in a long comeback. Back in October the Junior was involved in a major cycling accident that left the backstroker with two broken arms.
In addition to Bohus and Canty, thirty-five additional swimmers were recognized as TeamUnify / CollegeSwimming Conference Swimmers-of-the-Week for their performnces from February 1-7, 2016
