Texas Concludes Solid Outing at Texas Invitational

Texas kept on rolling at its own Texas Invitational tonight in Austin.

AUSTIN, Texas – Individual wins from Tasija Karosas, Madisyn Cox and Remedy Rule plus a top national time in the 400 freestyle relay highlighted the final night of competition for the Longhorns Saturday at the Texas Invitational.   
 
Karosas led a one-two Longhorns finish in the 200 backstroke where she took the victory in 1:51.65, good for an NCAA automatic-qualifying cut.  Freshman Claire Adams followed closely behind in second at 1:52.43.
 
Rebecca Millard dropped a 47.84 in the 100 freestyle championship final, good for second place, the No. 5 time in the nation this season and a personal best. 
 
Cox scored her third win in as many events and posted the nation’s fourth-fastest time in the 200 breaststroke at 2:07.21, a personal best.  Senior Jordan Surhoff added a sixth-place mark of 2:13.44.
 
Rule posted a lifetime best on her way to victory in the 200 butterfly at 1:53.97, good for the sixth-fastest swim ever at UT.  Freshman Lauren Case, a two-time member of the USA Swimming National Junior Team in the 200m butterfly, took third at 1:54.69.  
 
The Horns wrapped the meet win a victory and a top national time in the 400 freestyle relay, where Millard, Adams, Cox and Karosas finished in 3:12.29, good for the fourth-fastest relay ever at UT.  Notably, the relay moves ahead of a previously top-ranked relay from Stanford that features Olympians Katie Ledecky, Simone Manuel and Lia Neal. 
 
Sophomore Joanna Evans added a fourth-place mark of 16:08.50 in the 1,650 freestyle.

AUSTIN, Texas – Two-time defending NCAA champion Texas picked up victories and top national times from American record holders Clark Smith, Will Licon and Jack Conger as the Longhorns wrapped a productive four-day stint Saturday at their annual Texas Invitational. 
 
Smith kicked off the night with a top national time in the 1,650-yard freestyle, where he took the win in 14 minutes, 32.77 seconds, just off of his school mark of 14:31.29 from the 2016 Big 12 Championships. 
 
Texas sent three Longhorns to the 200 backstroke championship final where All-America junior Jonathan Roberts led the UT contingent in third place at 1:41.80.  Sophomore John Shebat took fourth at 1:42.56 while freshman Josh Artmann produced a nice swim at 1:42.75 for fifth place.
 
Junior Brett Ringgold led the Horns with his third-place time of 42.71 in the 100 freestyle championship final, and sophomore Townley Haas added a sixth-place mark of 43.28.  Sophomore Tate Jackson won the “C” final with a personal best of 42.79.  
 
Licon put together an outstanding swim in the 200 breaststroke, where he holds the American record and the last two NCAA titles.  The El Paso native won by four-and-a-half seconds in 1:50.76, the fastest time in the nation by well over two seconds.
 
Texas sent out yet another American record holder for the 200 butterfly championship final in the form of Conger.  The Olympic gold medalist in the 4x200m freestyle relay led from start-to-finish and took the win in 1:40.24, the top time in the country this season.  Sophomore Max Holter added a 1:44.00 for the win in the 200 butterfly “B” final.
 
Texas capped the meet with a No. 3 national time and a victory in the 400 freestyle relay, where Ringgold, Haas, Conger and Jackson finished in 2:51.34.

AUSTIN, Texas – Stanford finished its Fall season on a high note by claiming multiple NCAA qualifying times on Day 4 of the Texas Invitational at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
 
“Based on the qualifying standard, we picked up 11 qualifiers for the NCAA championship meet this week,” said Goldman Family Director of Men’s Swimming Ted Knapp. “True Sweetser, Patrick Conaton, Matt Anderson and Andrew Liang thoroughly earned their cuts today, and we were very pleased with the 400-yard freestyle relay effort.”
 
In the first swim of the evening session, Stanford once again showed its depth by putting three swimmers in the top five of the 1,650-yard freestyle. Sweetser (14:35.03) led the Cardinal in second place, followed by Liam Egan (14:53.07) in fourth and Grant Shoults (14:53.44) in fifth. 
 
Patrick Conaton (1:41.60) followed it up with a second consecutive runner-up finish in the 200-yard backstroke. Jack Walsh (1:45.72) was third in the B-final, Benjamin Ho (1:45.96) took fifth and Abrahm DeVine (1:47.38) was eighth.
 
Sam Perry (42.55) paced the Cardinal in the 100-yard freestyle A-final, finishing second by just .31 seconds. Cole Cogswell (43.65) finished third in the B-final while shaving .41 seconds off his preliminary time.
 
Matt Anderson (1:55.26) and Maxwell Williamson (1:45.32) scored podium finishes in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing second and third, respectively.
 
Jimmy Yoder (1:44.29) led Stanford in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing third. Shoults (1:48.79) finished eighth in the A-final, and Tom Kremer (1:45.17) dropped 1.69 seconds from his preliminary time to finish third in the B-final.
 
Stanford’s team of Perry, Kremer, Cogswell and Conaton (2:52.70) placed third in the 400-yard freestyle relay, the final event of the meet.
Liang (45.93) also picked up an NCAA standard time in a 100-yard butterfly time trial.
 
Stanford returns to the pool Jan. 6 when it hosts Pacific at Avery Aquatics Center. The Cardinal’s conference schedule will include a Jan. 20-21 trip to Arizona State and Arizona, followed by a home meet against USC on Feb. 4 and a visit to Cal on Feb. 18. The 2017 Pac-12 Men’s Swimming Championships will be held March 1-4 in Federal Way, Washington.

Freshman Louise Hansson and junior Dylan Carter swept the women’s and men’s 100y free with NCAA A cuts to highlight USC’s efforts on the final day of the Texas Hall of Fame Swimming Invite in Austin on Saturday (Dec. 3).
 
Hansson registered her fourth NCAA A cut of the season with her second win of the weekend, claiming the 100y free in 47.55 to hold off Texas’ Rebecca Millard (47.84). Hansson bettered her winning time with a 47.51 in prelims (and lowered it again in the final relay leadoff). She also won the 100y fly Friday night, was second in the 200y IM Thursday and fourth in the 100y back Friday. Senior Anika Apostalon was fourth in the 100y free in 48.48 after a season best 48.28 in prelims.
 
Carter, who broke the school record in the 100y fly Friday, won the 100y free Saturday with a PR 42.24 for USC’s first 100y A cut in the event this year and Troy’s fastest since the 2015 NCAAs.
 
The final session was kicked off with the 1650y free and freshman Rebecca Mann led the USC’s women’s finishers in sixth with an NCAA B cut of 16:12.97 with sophomore Elizabeth Stinson 11th (16:32.02). Junior Pawel Furtek led USC’s men in 14th (15:28.57, B cut).
 
USC put two in the women’s 200y back A final as junior Hannah Weiss was sixth (1:55.24) and sophomore Hanni Leach eighth (1:55.73), season best B cuts for both. Sophomore Patrick Mulcare led Troy in the men’s race in sixth with a 1:43.27.
 
Sophomore Riley Scott, who won the 100y breast Friday, took second in the 200y breast with a 2:08.99, just off her PR, while senior Riley Hayward (2:11.30) posted a PR for fourth and senior Kelsey Kafka took seventh (2:13.72). Freshman Mario Koenigsperger led USC in the men’s race, taking fifth in a USC season-best 1:57.10, B cut.
 
Sophomore Maddie Wright posted a pair of PRs in the 200y fly, first a 1:54.46 for top seed out of prelims and then a 1:54.45 (B cut) to take second by Texas’ Remedy Rule’s 153.97. Freshman Catherine Sanchez was fifth in 1:57.29, also a PR. Senior Michael Domagala topped Troy in the men’s A final with a fifth in 1:46.11.
 
USC closed with a pair of second-place NCAA A cuts in the 400y free relays, events the Trojans have become major players in in the last couple of years.
 
The women’s quartet of freshmen Hansson (who lowered her 100y free A cut to 47.47 in the leadoff swim), Tatmum Wade, Moseley and Apostalon were second in 3:12.74, 0.45 back of Texas. The men’s foursome of juniors Santo Condorelli and Ralf Tribuntsov, sophomore Patrick Mulcare and Carter posted a 2:52.21, 0.87 back of the Longhorns.
  
The USC women won the NCAA title in the event last year while the men claimed it in 2015.

Denver Press Release

AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Denver men’s and women’s swimming programs combined for 12 NCAA B Standards from 12 different swimmers on the final day of the 2016 Texas Invitational Saturday at Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. 
 
Freshman Colin Gilbert (Kamloops, B.C.) grabbed another NCAA B Standard in his first event of the afternoon, finishing the grueling 1650 free in eighth with a time of 15:01.39. Teammate Warren Sexson (Mahtomedi, Minn.) also grabbed an NCAA Standard in the distance race with a time of 15:29.92.
 
Following the distance races, junior Morgan McCormick (Golden, Colo.) made Denver’s first appearance in an A Final on the afternoon, touching seventh with an NCAA B time of 1:55.56.
 
Less than 24 hours after winning the 100 back in a very competitive event, junior Anton Loncar (Hillsboro, Ore.) earned his second event win of the Texas Invitational, this time winning the 200 back at 1:40.57. Junior Jared Smith (Boulder City, Nev.) also picked up a B time in the race, touching first in the C Final at 1:45.13. This morning, Loncar broke the school record in his prelim swim for the event with a time of 1:40.33.
 
Shifting gears back to freestyle, senior Johanna Roas (Munich, Germany) clocked in the 100 yard race at 48.99, good for a fifth place finish and an NCAA B Standard. Later in the meet, Roas’ leadoff leg of the women’s 400 free relay was timed at 48.72, a 100 yard free school record.
 
Redshirt-senior Kyle Robrock (Savage, Minn.) also earned a standard and a 12th place finish in the men’s 100 free with a time of 43.74.
 
Senior Amanda Sanders (Superior, Colo.) reached the wall in third in the 200 breast with an NCAA B time of 2:10.73. Sophomore Bailey Andison (Smiths Falls, Ontario) finished third in the B Final, also earning herself a provisional time of 2:14.13.
 
Senior Tim Cottam (Sydney, Australia) finished seventh in the men’s 200 breast to lead the Pioneers after a B time of 1:58.89.
 
Junior Heidi Bradley (Victoria, B.C.) made Denver’s next A Final appearance, finishing eighth with an NCAA B Standard time of 1:59.56 to her name in the 200 butterfly. Redshirt-senior Andrew Torres (Arvada, Colo.) led Denver in the men’s event with the final B time in the race, clocking in at 1:47.05, good for 12thon Saturday.

Arizona Press Release

AUSTIN, Texas – Arizona men’s and women’s swimming concluded the Texas Invitational on Saturday adding 29 more NCAA cuts. The men notched 17 ‘B’ cuts while the women earned 11 ‘B’ cuts and one ‘A’ cut. Arizona also had four top-three finishes and six top-four finishes on the night. 
 
Overall, the Cats tallied 101 NCAA cuts at the invitational, 53 coming from the men and 48 from the women. The lady Cats earned an ‘A’ cut in each relay. 
 
On the final day, the women had three top-three finishes, the first coming in the 1,650 free. Junior Tjasa Oder placed third in the event with a time of 16:02.20. Freshman Kirsten Jacobsen took fifth (16:12.38) while freshman Hannah Cox took eighth (16:16.43). Sophomore Emma McCarthy finished tenth with 16:28.74 as all four swimmers earned ‘B’ cuts. 
 
Junior Cameron McHugh then hit the wall third in the 200 back with 1:53.76 for a ‘B’ cut. Sophomore Taylor Garcia and junior Jenna Bauer also notched ‘B’ cuts in the event. 
 
The relay team of sophomore Annie Ochitwa, sophomore Katrina Konopka, McHugh and Cox finished third in the 400 free relay, touching in 3:13.63 for an NCAA ‘A’ cut. 
 
Junior Paige Kremer took sixth in the 100 free for a ‘B’ cut in the event. Even though the Cats didn’t have swimmers in the A final of the 200 breast, junior Alexandra Martelle, freshman Kennedy Lohman and sophomore Mackenzie Rumrill all earned ‘B’ cuts. 
 
The men gave Arizona it’s best finish of the night as sophomore Justin Wright was runner-up in the 200 fly with a time of 1:42.88. Wright currently holds the school record in the event. 
 
The Cats made up half of the A final in the 200 fly as freshman Brendan Meyer took fourth (1:44.84), junior Riccardo Maestri took sixth (1:46.20) and sophomore Mathias Oh placed seventh (1:47.70). Junior Nick Thorne then finished second in the B final with 1:44.85. All five swimmers earned ‘B’ cuts. 
 
In the 200 breast, senior Gage Crosby placed fourth, touching in 1:56.96 while sophomore Matt Salerno took fourth in the B final with 1:59.60. Both swimmers earned ‘B’ cuts.
 
The team of freshman Jorge Iga, sophomore Chatham Dobbs, junior Chad Idensohn and junior J.P. Beach finished fourth in the 400 free relay for another relay ‘B’ cut (2:53.37). 
 
Beach also earned a ‘B’ cut in the 100 free with a seventh-place finish (43.60). Iga then notched a ‘B’ cut, finishing first in the B final of the event with 43.58.
 
Senior Thane Maudslien was the only Cat in the 200 back A final, taking eighth with 1:44.08 and earning a ‘B’ cut. Freshman Thomas Anderson, sophomore Matt Lujan and freshman Steven Medvedev also earned ‘B’ cuts. 
 
In the 1,650 free, junior Chris Wieser took ninth with a time of 15:09.74. Freshman Jared Kaskawal placed 12th (15:25.82) followed by Meyer (15:26.89). All three men notched ‘B’ cuts.
