The Miami women and Denison men held onto the lead after day 2 of the Miami Invitational.

OXFORD, Ohio – Miami University’s swimming and diving program finished day two of the 23rd annual Miami Invitational on Friday night at the Corwin Nixon Aquatic Center.

The women are in the lead with 785 points and the men are in fifth place with 342 points.

The team of Brittany Dudzinski, Stephanie LeMire, Morgan Quesnel and Elise Campbell started off the night strong for the Red & White, winning the 200-yard medley relay. They clocked in at 1:41.70, defeating second-place Bowling Green by 0.01 seconds.

In the 400-yard IM, the RedHawks went 1-2-3 with the trio of Hannah Fuchs, Holly Schuster and Carolyn Jungers. Fuchs won the event (4:21.41), with Schuster (4:22.95) and Jungers (4:23.63) close behind.

Ella Moynihan picked up another win on the season, claiming victory in the 200-yard freestyle. She came in with a time of 1:47.98.

LeMire and Elise Campbell finished second and third for Miami, respectively, in the 100-yard breaststroke. LeMire clocked in at 1:02.01 and Campbell in 1:02.04.

Dudzinski picked up a third-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, coming in at 55.40.

For the men, they started off the meet with a fifth-place finish in 200-yard medley relay. James Wray, Hutch Blackstone, Pete Simcox and Lucas Brock touched the wall in 1:31.41, only 0.22 seconds behind the third-place finisher.

Wray placed fourth in the 100-yard backstroke. He swam a time of 50.22.
Brock tied for sixth in the 200-yard freestyle with Denison’s Ryan Stevenson. The pair clocked in with a time of 1:40.82.

Blackstone collected 13 points for the RedHawks by finishing eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke, coming in at 56.14.

In the Miami Diving Invitational, Pei Lin set the pool record in the three-meter dive, scoring 414 points. The previous record was set by Zhihuan Xu of Guangdong in 2011, when she scored 412.15 points.

The team will be back tomorrow for the third and final day as prelims begin at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m

OXFORD, Ohio – The young Milwaukee men's swimming and diving team continued to improve in the second day of action at the big Miami Invitational hosted by Miami University at the Corwin Nixon Aquatic Center Friday.

UWM finished the second day of the three-day meet with 247 points for sixth place overall. Division III powerhouse Denison leads after two days with 691.5 points.

Milwaukee had its highlight of the day in the 100 butterfly. Five Panthers scored in the sprint event, with senior Yev Foster leading the way. Foster clocked in at 49.66 for fourth overall on the day and sixth in the Horizon League this season. Next up was sophomore Anthony Kolbus, taking seventh on the day in 50.22. Max Ward came in 22nd in 51.22, with Sam Salganik placing 24th in 51.30 and Ryan Menninga 27th in 51.78.

In the 400 IM, Patrick Kelley continued to shine in his first collegiate season. The freshman touched the wall in 4:06.70, good for fifth in the league this season. Dane Van Allen actually finished ahead of Kelley in the standings while swimming in a different heat with a time of 4:06.96, seventh in the conference this year.

A pair of Panther youngsters finished side-by-side in the 100 breast. Justin Ogle took 16th on the day in 57.93, fellow freshman Tim Greci 17th in 58.29, both significant season-best times.

Four more UWM swimmers took to the podium in the 200 free. Andrew Kasper started things off with a 16th-place finish in 1:42.87. Nick Menninga won the C-final in 1:41.25, now the sixth-fastest time in conference this season. Ryan Scripp was next in 22nd at 1:42.72, with Jacob Fase right behind at 1:43.14.

Kyle Gerum made a big jump in the 100 back, dropping nearly two seconds for a season-best time of 50.65, taking 11th. Evan Kuker also placed, taking 25th in 52.42.

Gerum also helped start the day in the 200 medley relay. He, along with Greci, Kolbus and N. Menninga, came in seventh with a time of 1:32.01.

Milwaukee saved its best for last. In the 800 free relay, Fase, Kasper, Scripp and N. Menninga teamed up to take fourth overall in 6:47.64 – now ranking them second in the Horizon League this season.

The Panthers wrap up the three-day big meet Saturday, with prelims again starting at 10 am Central, and finals slated to start at 6 pm following the 1650 free.


OXFORD, Ohio – The Milwaukee women's swimming and diving team turned in another outstanding performance and moved up in the standings in the second day of action at the Miami Invitational hosted by Miami University at the Corwin Nixon Aquatic Center.

UWM finished the second day with 385 points – good for third place out of 10 teams at the star-studded meet. Miami leads with 785 points, with Emory in second at 430.5.

Sara Bentley stole the headlines on the day for the Panthers. The junior competed in three events on the day, saving her best for last. In her final event of the day – the 100 backstroke – the Ames, Iowa native nearly broke her own school record with a blazing time of 54.88 seconds for second place on the day and a mere two-hundredths of a second shy of the win. That time is also the fastest in the Horizon League this season by nearly a full second and an NCAA B-cut time, putting her in position to potentially qualify for the NCAA Championships this March.

Milwaukee showed off its depth in the event, with Maddy Nelson taking sixth overall with a season-best time of 55.76 – now the second-fastest time in the league this season. Alicia Beam (57.01), Kady Ruemmele (57.42), Kristin Zablocki (58.15) and Keely Frankwicz (59.63) all also placed in the evening final.

Earlier in the day, Bentley also nearly broke the school record in the 100 butterfly. In that event, she came in fourth overall with a time of 55.37 – just over two tenths shy of Diana Diel's school record of 55.14 set back in 2011.

Bentley was once again far from alone, with Ruemmele taking 15th in 56.79, followed by Cecilia Ostergren (57.10) and Maggie Burns (57.16).

One day after a dominating day by the sprint freestylers, they were at it again, this time in the 200 free. Mandie Siehs led the charge with a third-place finish in a season-best time of 1:50.22 – now the second fastest in the conference this season. Danielle Kudis (1:51.83) and Emma Helgeson (1:53.35) also turned in solid performances for more Panther points.

In the 400 IM, it was Addison Skogman taking the lead for the Black & Gold. One year after breaking the school and freshman record, the sophomore clocked in at 4:28.85 in finals for an eighth-place showing. Carolina Matamoros (4:33.27), Alena Bodnaruk (4:35.55) and Sami Stelpflug (4:40.01) all also swam in the finals for more valuable points.

Natalie O'Connell earned her way into the A-final with a strong showing in prelims before taking ninth overall in finals with a time of 1:04.42. Adrienne DiFoggio nearly won the B-final in 1:04.32 for 11th, with Jenn Kordik 16th in 1:05.41 and Burns 23rd in 1:06.38.

Milwaukee also started and ended the day with outstanding showings in both relays.

In the opening 200 medley relay, Bentley, O'Connell, Shelby Rozeboom and Siehs combined for a fourth-place finish in 1:42.10.

Then, in the closing 800 free relay, the Panthers turned in one of the best times in the league. Natalie Johnson, Helgeson, Skogman and Siehs teamed up to take fourth on the day in 7:35.08 – now second in the conference this season.

The Panthers wrap up the three-day big meet Saturday, with prelims again starting at 10 am Central, and finals slated to start at 6 pm following the 1650 free.

OXFORD, Ohio – The Indiana University men's and women's swimming teams continued to swim well at the Miami (OH) Invitational in Oxford, Ohio on Friday.
 
Shelby Koontz was terrific in the women’s 100 butterfly, winning with a personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 54.23. Koontz’s mark ranks her as the 13th-fastest performer in the event in IU history.
 
Nicholas Carlson also had a standout swim for the Hoosiers, winning the 200 freestyle with a NCAA B cut time of 1:37.53. Joey Snodderly took 13th overall with a mark of 1:41.38, while Christopher Woods touched 25th in a time of 1:43.87. On the women’s side, Hannah Sakaluk took 11th with a time of 1:51.53.
 
In the men’s 100 breaststroke, Sam Apa led the Hoosiers, taking second with a personal-best time and NCAA B cut time of 54.13. Apa’s time ranks him as the 10th-fastest swimmer in the event in IU history. Steve Husch took fifth overall with a mark of 55.49, while Nikola Andjelic was seventh in 55.86.
 
Katie Keller had a personal-best showing in the women’s 100 backstroke, finishing fourth with a time of 55.41. Keller’s time ranks her as the 19th-best performer in the event in Indiana history.
 
On the men’s side, Wyeth Brock tied for 13th with a mark of 51.06, while Drew Keenan was 15th in a time of 51.41.
 
For the IU women in the 100 breaststroke, Hope Hayward placed seventh overall with a personal-best time of 1:03.94, ranking her as the 20th-fastest swimmer in the event at IU. Teammate Taylor Truex was 13th overall in a time of 1:04.58.
 
Brian Valedon led a 2-3-4 finish for Indiana in the men’s 400 IM, placing second with a personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 3:53.04. Valedon’s mark ranks him as the 20th-best performer in the event in school history. Jackson Etter took third place in 3:54.97, while Ethan Curl was fourth in 3:56.86.
 
In the men’s 100 butterfly, Kyle Morris placed third overall with a time of 49.57, while Nolan Plant was 15th with a mark of 50.65. Brock was 16th in 50.87.
 
Hayward led IU in the 400 IM, placing sixth with a time of 4:26.86, while Lydia Welty was 18th with a time of 4:37.91.
 
In the men’s 800 freestyle relay, the team of Plant, Woods, Matthew Kint and Carlson took fifth overall with a time of 6:47.78. In the women’s 200 medley relay, the IU team of Keller, Truex, Koontz and Hannah Sakaluk placed 10th with a mark of 1:46.67. On the men’s side, the team of Keenan, Husch, Plant and Andjelic took 10th with a time of 1:46.67.
 
The Indiana University men's and women's swimming and diving teams will conclude competition at both the AT&T USA Swimming Winter Nationals and at the Miami (OH) Invitational on Saturday.
