Texas Off And Running at Big 12's

Texas won all five events to hold the lead after the first day of the 2013 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships at Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.

Despite UT's three victories, West Virginia men lead with a first-day total of 124 points, as the Longhorns sit in second place (117) and TCU in third (87). On the women's side, UT (80) holds the lead heading into Day Two. WVU has 68 points, followed by TCU (62), Iowa State (60) and Kansas (30).

In the two men's swimming finals contested on the first day, Texas took the top spot in both. First in the 200-yard medley relay, Cole Gragin, Dax Hill, Tripp Cooper and Madison Wenzler posted a time of 1:25.23. In the 800-yard freestyle relay, the UT team of Hill, Jake Ritter, Kip Darmody and Clay Youngquist took first with a time 6:17.33.

The Texas women's foursome of Sarah Denninghoff, Laura Sogar, Kelsey Amundsen and Ellen Lobb set a UT record in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:36.69. The Longhorns' quartet of Samantha Tucker, Alex Hooper, Kelsey Leneave and Denninghoff also won the 800-yard freestyle relay with a 7:01.61 time.

In the meet's intitial diving event, Texas took the top two spots with UT freshman Cory Bowersox earning his first Big 12 diving title after scoring 360.55.

The championships resume Thursday at 10 a.m. CT with preliminary action with the swimming finals slated for a 6 p.m. CT start.
