Texas and Texas A&M share the lead on the women's side while Texas A&M's men are in sole possession of first after the first day of the 2011 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships. The Aggies' men squad leads with a first-day total of 122 points, as Missouri sits in second place (117) and Texas in third (107). On the women's side, UT and A&M are tied at 74, followed by Missouri and Kansas (62), Nebraska (56) and Iowa State (52).
In the 200-yard medley relay, the Texas men earned the victory with a mark of 1:25.40. Comprised of Cole Cragin, Scott Spann, Woody Joye and Jimmy Feigen, the Longhorns recorded their seventh straight win and 11th overall in the event. On the women's side, the Aggies' Tess Simpson, Breeja Larson, Paige Miller and Maria Sommer set a Big 12 record with a winning time of 1:36.62.
Texas swept the 800-yard freestyle relay, as Karlee Bispo, Katie Riefenstahl, Adrienne Woods and Samantha Tucker took the title on the women's side with a time of 7:00.97. On the men's side, the relay of Woody Joye, Neil Caskey, Scott Jostes and Dax Hill swam a time of 6:21.67. It is the Longhorns' 14th victory in the event.
A&M's Grant Nel earned his first Big 12 one-meter diving title and second overall title after scoring a 426.00 and setting a Big 12 Championship meet record. Nel won the three-meter competition at last year's event.
The championships resume Thursday at 10 a.m. CT with preliminary action while the swimming finals are slated for a 6 p.m. CT start.
