Marist Sweeps Binghamton

Marist Men

The Marist men's swimming and diving team ended the 2015-16 regular season 5-5-1 overall with a 164-134 win at Binghamton on Jan. 30.

Freshman Miguel Basalo and junior Ryan Murphy finished 1-2 in a pair of long distance freestyle events. Murphy clocked in at 4:49.36 in the 500-yard event followed by Basalo at 4:52.48. At 1,000 yards Basalo had the faster time (9:55.51) with Murphy finishing in second place (10:00.54). Murphy also had the fastest time in the 200-yard freestyle, swimming to a time of 1:44.74.

Freshman Daniel Knoll chipped in to the Red Foxes' dominant freestyle performances, clocking in at 47.17 seconds at 100 yards. He ranked second in the 50-yard freestyle (21.49 seconds) and was on Marist's first-place 200-yard freestyle relay squad alongside junior Manuel Garcia, freshman Gregory Violette and Murphy. Garcia was another event winner, taking the top spot in the 100-yard butterfly (52.36 seconds).  

For the second consecutive dual meet, sophomore Peter Gallino and senior Josh Dodway took the top two places on the 1- and 3-meter boards. At one meter, Gallino put up 282.52 points to Dodway's score of 275.02 points. Dodway racked up 297.90 points at three meters followed by Gallino's mark of 280.13 points.

The Red Foxes will compete at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships from Feb. 10-13 at Erie Community College in Buffalo, New York. 


Marist Women

The Marist women's swimming and diving team won its ninth consecutive dual meet to close out the 2015-16 regular season by defeating the Binghamton Bearcats, 181-112, on Jan. 30. The Red Foxes will head into the postseason with a 10-1 overall record.

Marist went 1-2 in three events. In the 1,000-yard freestyle, sophomore Sara Nestrowitz had the top time of 10:43.28 followed by classmate Deirdre Connor (10:52.37). Junior Meredith Wurtz (1:57.97) and senior captain Bridget Curley (1:58.87) took the top two places in the 200-yard event. Sophomore Georgia Goldman (59.81 seconds) and senior Bethany Powhida (59.93 seconds) also went back-to-back in the 100-yard backstroke. 

Wurtz was victorious in the 50- (24.77) and 100- yard freestyle (53.73) while Powhida took first place in the 200- yard backstroke (2:08.15) and 500-yard freestyle (5:10.52).

On the 1- and 3-meter boards, sophomore Megan Berardelli was the winner with 258.75 and 270.90 points, respectively. Freshmen Lauren Katz and Jessica Rieger rounded out the top three in both diving events for the Red Foxes. 

Marist will compete at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships from Feb. 10-13 at Erie Community College in Buffalo, New York. Tickets are available through Ticketleap. The Red Foxes went unbeaten in MAAC meets during the regular season, extending their streak of consecutive conference victories to 35.
