Purdue Leads Northwestern, Trails Minnesota

Allie Davis’ new pool record while winning the 200 freestyle highlighted the opening night of action for the Purdue swimming and diving teams at the two-day Big Ten Triple Duals on Friday evening.

The Boilermakers won four events Friday. Along with Davis, Purdue winners included Josh Brooks in the 1,000 free, Danny Conway in the 200 butterfly and Emily Fogle in the 100 breaststroke. Chicagoland natives Conway and Fogle were both victorious in their return to their home state.

The Purdue men and women both held leads over Northwestern but trailed Minnesota in the team scoring after the first half of the two-day meet. The men’s dual with Northwestern, in which Purdue leads 99-87 after Friday, sets up as the most competitive head-to-head matchup of the six. The 18th-ranked Purdue women had a comfortable 129-57 lead on Northwestern but trail No. 24 Minnesota 109-77. The Purdue men were down 117-60 to No. 20 Minnesota after day one action.

Davis won a head-to-head showdown with Minnesota’s Laura Votava in the 200 free. Both swimmers eclipsed the pool record at NU’s Norris Aquatics Center, Davis winning the event by a full second with a time of 1:46.20. It was another NCAA provisional-qualifying time and a team-high 16th individual event victory for the senior.

Along with winning the 200 fly, Conway demonstrated his versatility by finishing fourth in both the 200 individual medley and 1,000 free. His winning time of 1:48.93 in the 200 fly was less than a second off his Purdue season-best time (1:48.10) in the event.

Brooks posted a new Purdue season-best time (9:22.03) while winning the 1,000 free and swam the anchor leg on the 400 free relay that finished third.

Led by Fogle’s NCAA provisional-qualifying time (1:01.53), the Boilermakers had three of the top four finishers in the 100 breast. Cady Farlow took third and Caroline Weigand placed fourth.

Joe Cifelli (1-meter diving), Mary Beth Dunnichay (3-meter diving), Kaersten Meitz (1,000 free), Emmy Rawson (200 fly), the women’s 200 medley and 400 free relay teams, and the men’s 200 medley relay all finished as the runner-up in an event for Purdue. Meitz also took third behind Davis and Votava in the 200 free.

Adam Noens was the Boilermakers’ top finisher in a pair of individual events, the men’s 200 free and 200 IM. Meagan Lim also posted a pair of top-five finishes by placing third in the 200 IM and fourth in the 200 fly.

The Big Ten Triple Duals conclude Saturday at 1 p.m. ET.
