Marist Splits with Seton Hall

Marist Men

Despite 1-2 finishes on both diving boards, the Marist men's swimming and diving team fell to Seton Hall, 153-141, in a close dual meet Jan. 26 in McCann Natatorium.

On his Senior Night, Josh Dodway won the 1-meter dive with 312.37 points and took the top spot at three meters after scoring 288.75 points. Sophomore Peter Gallino finished right behind Dodway in second place with 291.22 points and 288.75 points, respectively. 

The closest finish of the night came in the 1,000-yard freestyle, as junior Ryan Murphy came in second place, clocking in at 9:39.11. Murphy's time was .01 second short of Seton Hall freshman Lior Grubert.

Murphy did place first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:41.25. He also anchored Marist's first place 400-yard freestyle squad that also featured freshman Daniel Knoll, junior Manuel Garcia and freshman Miguel Madeira. The foursome clocked in at 3:09.31 to win the final event of the meet by almost six seconds. 

Knoll won a pair of individual events, completing the 50-yard freestyle in 21.52 seconds and finishing the 100-yard event in 47.54 seconds. He placed third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.46) to pick up three more points for Marist.

The Red Foxes will conclude the 2015-16 regular season at Binghamton with a 1 p.m. dual meet Jan. 30.


Marist Women

The Marist women's swimming and diving team moved to 9-1 overall with a 172-123 triumph against Seton Hall on Senior Night in McCann Natatorium.

Senior captain Bethany Powhida won three individual events and one relay event to lead the Red Foxes to their eighth straight dual meet victory and match last season's win total. She began the meet swimming the third leg of the 200-yard medley relay squad that posted a first-place time of 1:48.97. She was the fastest competitor in the 200-yard backstroke (2:07.09) and won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:55.63 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:07.14.

The Red Foxes had three more top times in freestlye events, as junior Meredith Wurtz won the 50- (24.67 seconds) and 100- (53.74 seconds) yard competitions, while sophomore Shannon Gordon won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:44.51.

Junior Isabella Morreale won a pair of breaststroke events with times of 1:06.43 in the 100 and 2:25.56 in the 200.

The 1-meter dive came down to 0.45 points, as Marist sophomore Megan Berardelli edged freshman teammate Lauren Katz. Berardelli racked up 235.65 points while Katz ended up in second with 235.20 points. In the 3-meter event, Berardelli placed first with 279.22 points and Katz placed third (253.50 points).

Marist will compete in its 2015-16 regular season finale at 1 p.m. Jan. 30 when it faces off against Binghamton.
