WPI Swept by Pomona Pitzer

WPI Men

Seth MacDonald (Sherrill, NY) won a pair of individual events as the WPI men’s swimming and diving team fell 174-114 to Pomona-Pitzer at the open-air Halderman Pool Tuesday.
 
MacDonald was the only swimmer to turn in sub-two minute times in the 200-yard butterfly (1:57.63) and 200-yard IM (1:59.19) while Alex Gallant (Lakeville, MA) was a close second in the 200 IM with a 2:00.22. The 200-yard medley relay team of Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI), Tim Petri (Eksjo, Sweden), David Smallwood (Bangor, ME) and Andrew Bauer (Cumberland, RI) kicked things off with a winning-time of 1:35.58. Individually, Andrew Bauer went on to win the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.28) and touch the wall second in the 50-yard freestyle (21.76). Jack Bauer, meanwhile, struck gold in the 100-yard butterfly (52.27). Petri won the 100-yard breaststroke in under a minute (59.71) as Andrew Kelleher (Poughquag, NY) finished third (1:01.36). Petri also came in second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:11.61).
 
The 200-yard freestyle relay foursome of Alex Powers (North Scituate, RI), Nathan Hughes (Arlington, VA), Jack Bauer and Andrew Bauer collaborated to finish second (1:27.59). Powers was the runner up in the 100-yard backstroke (54.91) and was followed by Matt Houghton (Berkley, MA) in third (56.70). Hughes also pitched in with a second-place time in the 100-yard freestyle (1:58.46) and Houghton earned silver in the 200-yard backstroke (1:58.46).
 
Roberto Esquivel (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) and Craig Barrett (Edinburgh, Scotland) also posted runner up performances in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:31.39) and 500-yard freestyle (4:57.47), respectively.
 
WPI entertains Roger Williams and Bridgewater State on Saturday at 2 p.m.

 

WPI Women

Jenny Day (Chelmsford, MA) claimed a victory as the WPI women’s swimming and diving team dropped a 223-61 decision to host Pomona-Pitzer at the open-air Halderman Pool Tuesday.
 
Day captured the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:19.14 while also finishing second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:16.29) and helping the 200-yard medley and free relays earn third-place points. The medley relay (1:59.44) also included Julia Bushell (Windham, NH), Zoe Eggleston (Newtown, CT) and Eva Childers (Henniker, NH) while the free relay (1:47.67) featured Childers, Emily Matsco (Windham, NH) and Emily Martin (Penfield, NY).
 
Childers added a runner up time of 2:03.31 in the 200-yard freestyle to go along with a fourth-place 1:03.86 in the 100-yard butterfly. Martin came home second in the 50-yard freestyle (26.11) and tallied fourth-place points with a 57.54 in the 100-yard freestyle.
 
Stephanie Marcucci (Dingmans Ferry, PA) earned bronze in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke with times of 1:15.17 and 2:39.90, respectively.
 
Jamie Freud (Amherst, NH) turned in a pair of fourth-place performances with a 11:37.85 in the 1,000-yard freestyle and 2:24.05 in the 200 IM. Marissa Patterson (Hampton, NH) was also fourth with a 2:24.37 in the 200-yard backstroke and Bushell picked up fourth-place points in the 100-yard backstroke (1:08.14).
 
The Engineers return home to host Roger Williams and Bridgewater State on Saturday at 2 p.m.
