The Ball State women's swimming and diving team split its second double-dual of the weekend, with a 157-141 victory over McMaster and a 219.5-79.5 setback to host and Mid-American Conference rival Buffalo Saturday at the Alumni Arena Natatorium.
Overall, the Cardinals captured six event victories over the Marauders, while earning one event win over the Bulls. Junior Jessica Extine led Ball State with two individual event wins versus McMaster, taking top honors in both the 50 free (24.63) and the 100 free (53.95). In the same races, Extine finished second and third, respectively, against Buffalo.
“It was rewarding to earn a win on the road against a well-coached McMaster program,” Ball State women’s swimming and diving head coach Kristy Castillo said. “Buffalo hosted a great meet and competed well.”
Sophomore Amanda Kedzierski was the lone Ball State swimmer to earn an individual victory over Buffalo, topping the 100 breaststroke by touching the wall in 1:05.55. The effort was also good enough to top McMaster giving her two event victories in one swim.
Freshman Liz Madison earned her first career win in the 1000 freestyle, clocking in at a season-fast 10:55.29 to defeat the Marauders and take third against the Bulls.
Junior Katie Horn tallied an event win in the 200 butterfly with a 2:10.77 time, which was able to capture first against McMaster, as well as third versus Buffalo.
Rounding out the top swim finishes for the Cardinals against McMaster was sophomore Andrea Richter, posting a season-best 59.40 in the 100 fly. The time earned a fourth place mark against Buffalo.
In diving action, senior Madie Zirzow topped both the one- and three-meter competitions against both opponents, with scores of 245.25 and 239.85, respectively. The one-meter mark was a new season best for Zirzow.
“We responded better in some areas than others on the second day of our back-to-back competitions,” Castillo said. “These experiences will help us in preparation for multi-day meets later this season, and more recently, for next weekend.”
With another busy weekend ahead, the women’s swimming and diving team will take on two conference foes when it travels Miami on Oct. 30, prior to opening home action against Eastern Michigan on Oct. 31.
