North Florida Drops North Carolina A&T

The North Florida swim team delivered a  213-40 win over North Carolina A&T this afternoon, capturing their first win of the young season. Senior Amy Taylor was one of three Osprey event winners on a day that featured the largest point output since 2011.

Taylor led the way for the second-straight week, winning a total of three events, the 1000 freestyle, 100 butterfly and the 500 freestyle. After establishing a new career best in the 200 butterfly last week, Taylor crushed her 100 butterfly time this week with a time of 57.14. The senior cruised to victories in the 1000 and 500 freestyle with times of 10:29.71 and 5:05.26 respectively.

Campbell University was the overall meet winner, edging the Ospreys, 147-115 and topping North Carolina A&T, 209-37. The Camels won six of the last seven events to pull away from both teams.

In the first attempt of the season in the 50 backstroke, the Ospreys had three of the top four finishers Freshman Kaleigh Newcomb won the race with a time of 27.99, out-touching Angel Morrison who recorded a time of 28.25. Freshman Lizzy Prindle placed fourth in the event, posting a time of 28.77. Newcomb was able to continue her impressive day with a second place finish in the 100 backstroke later on the meet.

Sophomore Taylor Schmidinger contributed to the Ospreys hot start in the meet with her win in the 200 Free. Her time of 1:58.20 was just two seconds off her career best set at last year's Coastal Collegiate Conference Championships. Her swim was the fastest time registered by an Osprey this season.

Newcomer Nicole Nesto turned in a pair of second place finishes in two of the closest races of the afternoon. The sprinter was a tenth of a second off from winning the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.41 and was barely out-touched in the 100 freestyle by seven hundredths of a second.

The Ospreys will wrap up their home schedule next weekend when they take on defending CCSA Champion, Florida Gulf Coast University at noon. Fans are encouraged to arrive early to Semmes Aquatic Center as the North Florida swim program will on seniors, Amy Taylor and Janie Kennedy.
