Assumption Falls to Siena

Freshman Shannon Quirk (Wakefield, Mass. / Wakefield Memorial) claimed two victories in the Greyhounds' 171-115 loss to division I Siena on Saturday in her first collegiate dual-meet. The Hounds collected 21 top-three finishes on the day, including four gold-medal performances.

Quirk claimed her victories in the 1,000 freestyle (10:56.98) and the 500 freestyle (5:16.83) to collect a combined 18 points for the Hounds.

Quirk was followed in the 500 free by sophomore and reigning NE-10 Swimmer of the Year Carylyn Waite (Tampa, Fla. / Tampa Prep) who finished third with her time of 5:27.41.

Waite also collected a pair of second-place finishes in the 100 freestyle (55.42) and the 200 freestyle (1:59.29).

Sophomore Niamh Morgan (Bettystown, Ireland / Sacred Heart School) finished first in the 400 IM with her time of 4:42.95.

In the 200 butterfly, junior Rachel Lanam (Sebastian, Fla. / Sebastian River) placed second (2:14.23) followed by freshman Ali Petrozza (North Andover, Mass. / Austin Preparatory School) in third (2:14.23).

In the 200 backstroke, sophomore Courtney Barr (Waltham, Mass. / Matignon) registered a time of 2:12.73 for second place, followed in third by Morgan just under two seconds later (2:14.81). The pair collected seven points in the event toward the Hounds' final score.

Junior Rachel Gagnon (Tolland, Conn. / Tolland) also earned the silver in the 200 breaststroke with her time of 2:35.37 while freshman Shannon Fitzsimmons (Andover, Mass. / Andover) came in third (2:39.02).

Fitzsimmons finished third, behind Quirk, in the 1,000 freestyle with her time of 11:08.23.

In the 100 breaststroke, Gagnon also placed second with her time of 1:10.07 as the only Hound to finish in the top three in the event.

In the 100 backstroke, senior captain Victoria Weber (Augusta, Maine / Cony) claimed second (1:00.38) and was followed by Barr in third (1:01.94).

The 200 freestyle relay team, consisting of junior Allie Wuerfl (Wayland, Mass. / Wayland), freshman Caroline Cole (Highland Mills, N.Y. / Monroe Woodbury), sophomore Bella Omobono (Chelmsford, Mass. / Chelmsford) and sophomore Bry Veroneau (Belchertown, Mass. / Belchertown), finished first with its time of 1:45.09 and was followed by two more Greyhound squads.

The Hounds return to action on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 16-17, at the Catholic College Invitational at Boston College. The event is set to begin with preliminaries at 4 p.m. on Friday and will continue with finals throughout the day on Saturday.
