Wingate Sweeps Gardner-Webb

Wingate Men

The Wingate University men's swimming team earned a 181-134 triumph over NCAA Division I Gardner-Webb University Friday and Saturday. The Saturday element of the competition was held at the Bost Pool in Boiling Springs, while the Friday portion of the meet was contested at the Wingate Natatorium (Saturday results).

Senior Ossian Arvidsson (Kungälv, Sweden) won two individual events for the visiting Bulldogs. Arvidsson won the 500 Freestyle (4:40.73) and the 400 Individual Medley (4:07.39). In the 400 IM, Wingate claimed the gold, the silver and the bronze, as junior Øystein Fjeldberg (Oslo, Norway) and freshman Camden Wunderlich (Snohomish, Wash.) were second and third, respectively.

Senior Roman Kanyuka (Moscow, Russia) claimed a relay victory and an individual triumph Saturday. He swam the second leg as Wingate won the 400 Medley Relay with a time of 3:26.30. Later in the day, Kanyuka touched first in the 200 Breaststroke with his triumphant time of 2:07.09. WU senior Damjan Petrovski (Skopje, Macedonia) was second in the same event with his time of 2:07.93.

 

Wingate Women

The Wingate University women's swimming team led wire-to-wire, collecting a 174-133 victory over NCAA Division I Gardner-Webb University Friday and Saturday. The Saturday portion of the meet was contested at the Wingate Natatorium, while the Friday segment was held at the Bost Pool in Boiling Springs.

Five Wingate Natatorium records fell by the wayside Saturday, with the home-standing WU Bulldogs claiming four of the five new high-water marks. Bulldog junior Vika Arkhipova (Seversk, Russia) had a hand in two of the new pool records.

In Wingate's triumphant 400 Medley Relay swim to open Saturday's competition, Arkhipova set a new pool record in the 100 Backstroke. Later in the day, Arkhipova won the 200 Backstroke with a new pool record time of 2:02.71.

Bulldog junior Sofia Petrenko (Arkhangelsk, Russia) posted a new pool record in the 500 Freestyle when she touched first with her time of 5:05.67. Wingate junior Jessika Weiss (Macon, Ga.) won the 200 Breaststroke with a new pool record time of 2:20.58. Petrenko, Weiss and sophomore Leigh-Ann Clark (Newport News, Va.) joined Arkhipova on the 400 Medley Relay quarter.

Gardner-Webb sophomore London Schumacher (Waynesville, N.C.) set the fifth pool record Saturday, as she won the 400 Individual Medley with her triumphant time of 4:26.92. All total, Wingate won five events Saturday. In addition to the conquests listed above, Bulldog senior team captain Ana Fish (Carthage, N.C.) won the 100 Freestyle with a time of 53.16.
