Colorado Mesa Invite - Day 1

After one day of competition in the pool at the Colorado Mesa Invite, Colorado State University-Pueblo finds itself in fourth place. The Pack currently leads Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foes Colorado Mesa University and Adams State University entering the second day of competition.

CSU-Pueblo set a new program record in the 200 freestyle relay. The quartet of Jade Irick (Fr., Idaho Falls, Idaho), April McDonough (So., Frisco, Texas), Clarissa Gardella  (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif.), and Kristina Chang (Missouri City, Texas)finished their swim at 1:41.31, beating the old program record by 0.6 seconds. The Pack's earned 30 points and a fourth place finish in this event.

McDonough returned later to deliver the third fastest time in school history in the 500 free. McDonough's time of 5:11.12 earned her a fourth place finish and gave the Pack another 15 points.

Samantha Sannes (So., Torrance, Calif.) finished sixth in the 500 free with a new personal best of 5:14.77. Sannes' spotted the Pack another 13 points with her swim.

On the diving board, the Pack scored fourth place points from Stefany Busch (R-Fr., Carlsbad, Calif.), who finished with a score of 303.70 in the 1M diving event. Busch collected 15 points for the team with her fourth place finish.

The Pack ended  the night with another school relay record in the 400 yard medley. Irick and Sannes joined Emily Foster (Sr., Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Arianna Rohde (Fr., Anchorage, Alaska) to shatter the school's record with a time of 4:07.39. This time beats the previous school record by almost six seconds and brought another 26 points to the CSU-Pueblo camp.

In the 400 medley relay, the Pack's second team added another 10 points to the team total. The team of Chang, Gardella, Magdalena Contreras-Gomez (So., San Luis Potosi, Mexico), and Malin Wallmon (Jr., Stockholm, Sweden)  touched the wall at 4:10.32. This time also beat the previous school record, making it the second fastest time in ThunderWolves 400 yard medley relay history.

The Pack will look to build momentum off of day one as the try to chase a top three finish at the CMU Invite. The event continues Nov. 20 and can be seen live here.
