Queens (NC) Sweeps Catawba, Limestone

The Queens University of Charlotte men’s and women’s swim teams found victories over Limestone and Catawba on Saturday, November 14, 2015. The women would see a 161 score to a 43 score over Limestone in addition to going 170 to 27 against Catawba. The men found a 155 to a 49 score against Limestone. Queens scored 162 against Catawba who found 34 points in the meet.

Limestone would to Catawba with a 148 to 48 score on the men’s side and a 149 to 48 score on the women’s side.

Queens saw a first place swim in all but one event as the Royals dominated the competition. Queens would add another four pool records to the night.

Queens opened the meet with the men’s and women’s 400 Medley Relay. The Royals secured the women’s race with Caroline Arakelian, Shelly Prayson, Patricia Castro-Ortega, and McKenzie Stevens topping the pool with a 3:51.78. The men’s team of Zachary Phelps, Rostyslav Fedyna, Dion Dreesens, and Ben Taylor took a seven second gap over the second place team to swim a 3:20.47, breaking a pool record.

McKenzie Stevens and Hannah Craig took a 1-2 finish for Queens as Stevens swam a 10:32.18 in 1000 Yard Freestyle. Craig grabbed the second place spot with a 10:37.36.  Hector Tricas and Jackson Kojima secured the top two spots on the men’s side with Tricas finishing with a 9:34.96 and Kojima taking a 10:00.89.

Four top finishes fell to the Royals in the 200 Yard Freestyle. Linda Baron led the way with a 1:54.73. She was followed by Kyrie Dobson and Braelyn Tracy who went 1:55.47 and 1:56.27, respectively. Shane Knight closed the top spots for the team with a 1:58.72. The men’s team saw Ben Mayes clock the first place finish touch with a 1:42.50.

The women’s team again took the top finishes as C. Arakelian found the victory with a 24.24 in the 50 Yard Freestyle. Prayson finished the race in second with a 24.34 while Kristina Koloski finished with a third place 24.88 touch. Ben Taylor secured the first place finish on the men’s side going 20.78 for the race.

Josephina Lorda and Hayley Blaauw placed first and second in the 200 Yard Individual Medley. Lorda broke the pool record clocking a 2:10.73 in the race. Blaauw also broke the previous record touching the wall with a 2:12.46.

Four Royals rounded out the top on the men’s side of the 200 Yard Individual Medley. Nicholas Arakelian finished in first place with a 1:50.64. Inigo Alarcia clocked a 1:54.30 for second place while Mitchell Frey took third with a 1:58.11. Trevor Jones secured the final top swim for the team clocking a 1:59.63. to make it a Queens’ event.

Stevens took the top time in the 100 Yard Butterfly with a 58.11 as Lorda touched second with a time of 58.77. The men’s side saw Devyn Hughes grab the top spot with a 51.80. Enzo Pazos and Mitchell Harwood held the event for Queens as the two found their way into the second and third place positions. Pazos made it to the wall in 52.04 while Harwood touched with a 52.17.

Dobson and Mayes both clocked the fastest event times in the 100 Yard Freestyle. Dobson swam a 52.14 for the women’s race as Mayes finished to the wall with a 45.62.

Amanda Tipton touched the wall in a 58.94 taking the 100 Yard Backstroke event. Kosloski secured second with a 59.42.

Lauren Frizzell, Kathryn Johnston, and Craig took the 1-2-3 finish in the 500 Yard Freestyle, respectively. Frizzell swam a 5:07.80, while Johnston swam a 5:09.72 and Craig swam a 5:14.19. On the men’s side, N. Arakelian clocked a 4:32.05 for the event. Tricas and Kojima took second and third, respectively, as Tricas touched with a 4:42.90 and Kojima touched with a 4:49.73.

In the last individual swims of the night, Prayson clocked a 1:05.06 for first place in the 100 Breaststroke. Phelan touched the wall for a 1:05.39 for the event while Sude Ozgen and Blaauw took third and fourth, respectively. Ozgen went 1:05.94 and Blaauw went 1:08.22 for the event. Fedyna rounded out the night with a 55.19 in the 100 Breaststroke of the top time.

Queens ended with two relays taking first as Arakelian, Mary Claire Beaver, Dobson, and Lorda put together a 3:31.71 time for a pool record in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay. The men’s team also broke the pool record with Dreesens, Taylor, Mayes, and N. Arakelian touched a 3:00.43.

The Royals will compete at Wingate in their next meet as the team hits the water on December 4th for the Wingate Fall Frenzy.

 

Catawba

Freshman Marcia-Mariel Erhart posted another top five all-time swim during Catawba's swim meet against Queens and Limestone at the Levine Center Pool on Saturday. Erhart swam a time of 10:37.43 to finish third and record the fourth best time in school history.

Dominik Brus was the lone Catawba swimmer to earn a win on Saturday. He swam first in the 100 back in a time of 51.04. Erhart came back to finish fourth in the 500 free with a time of 5:16.62.

Jevgenij Gamper placed third in the 100 breast (58.77) and was sixth in the 50 free (21.95). Rafal Baran claimed fifth in the 100 fly (54.10).

Amy Cujas posted two top fives for the women. She was fourth in the 100 free (55.22) and fifth in the 200 IM (2:17.67).

Catawba will next swim at the Wingate Fall Frenzy from December 4-6.
