WPI Sweeps Babson, Brandeis, Smith

WPI Men

Sophomore Randy Menlanson (Attleboro, MA) swept the diving events as WPI claimed all but three races in a men’s swimming and diving double-dual with Babson and Brandeis Sunday afternoon at the Sports & Recreation Center. The Engineers topped Brandeis 216-77 and Babson 208-86. The Beavers, meanwhile, defeated the Judges 160-127.

Melanson totaled 234.80 on the one-meter and 221.80 on the 3-meter to secure both events for the Engineers. The 400-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay bookended the matinee with victories as senior Alex Powers (North Scituate, RI), junior Tim Petri (Eksjo, Sweden), freshman Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI) and senior Nathan Hughes (Arlington, VA) took the opener in a time of 3:33.32 and sophomore Karim Elsayed (Cairo, Egypt), junior Andrew Bauer (Cumberland, RI), sophomore Chris Massar (Monroe, CT) and Powers posted a time of 1:28.44.

Jack Bauer and Powers went on to deliver sweep their respective 100- and 200- races. Jack Bauer clocked a 48.44 in the 100-freestyle and 1:47.62 in the 200-freestyle as Powers posted a 53.13 in the 100-yard backstroke and a 1:58.74 in the 200-yard backstroke. Elsayed took the 100-yard butterfly (54.41) as sophomore Cam Back (St. Louis, MO) touched the wall first in the 200-yard version of the race (1:59.73).

Petri and Andrew Bauer also picked up an individual victory with a 1:00.23 in the 100-yard breaststroke and 21.74 in the 50-yard freestyle, respectively. Freshman Alex Gallant (Lakeville, MA) rounded out the Engineers triumphs with a 2:13.35 in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Babson senior An Truong (West Roxbury, MA) collected a pair of wins for the Beavers with a 4:54.16 in the 500-yard freestyle and a 4:18.46 in the 400-yard IM. Sophomore Zach Diamond (Staten Island, NY) logged the Judges lone victory with a 10:08.78 in the 1,000-yard freestyle.

WPI (3-0) travels to Coast Guard Saturday for a 1pm double-dual with Division I Providence. Babson (3-1) hosts Norwich Saturday at 1pm and Brandeis (0-6) is at Division II Bentley on Friday, November 20th at 6pm.


WPI Women

WPI won 11 of 16 events and saw 11 different Engineers register a victory as WPI swept Babson, Brandeis and Smith Sunday in women’s swimming and diving action at the Sports & Recreation Center.

The Crimson and Gray defeated Smith (202-98), Brandeis (220-73) and Babson (262-25). The Pioneers went 2-1 on the day with wins over Brandeis (170-121) and Babson (251-35) as the Judges defeated the Beavers (196-63).

Sophomore Jenny Day (Chelmsford, MA) claimed the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.46) and 200-yard freestyle (2:00.01) after anchoring the winning 400-yard medley relay team. Day along with junior Emily Martin (Penfield, NY), junior Zoe Eggleston (Newington, CT) and junior Eva Childers (Henniker, NH) turned in a time of 4:12.30 to get the afternoon off to a good start.

Martin went on to take the 50-yard freestyle (25.20) as Eggleston delivered in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.71) and Childers secured the 500-yard freestyle (5:27.74). Childers was also a member of the victoriuous 200-yard freestyle relay team that won in a time of 1:46.98. Junior Sierra Fowler (Bensalem, PA), sophomore Emily Matsco (Windham, NH) and junior Julia Bushell (Windham, NH) comprised the remainder of the quartet.

Matsco touched the wall first in the 100-yard freestyle with a 57.64 while freshman Caroline Flynn (Norwell, MA) raced to a winning 2:38.21 in the 200-yard breaststroke. Sophomore Jaime Freud (Amherst, NH) and freshman Jenna Vadervort (Voorheesville, NY) teamed to sweep the 100- and 200-yard backstroke with times of 1:04.47 and 2:20.41, respectively.

Rookie Desi Stoyanova (Bulgaria) led Smith with a pair of wins as she clocked a 4:54.52 in the 400-yard IM and posted an 11:07.86 in the 1,000-yard freestyle. The Pioneers also received victories from sophomore Elyse Stone (Westboro, MA) in the 1-meter dive (270.40) and senior Anna Partridge (Seattle, WA) on the 3-meter board (261.05) Brandeis freshman Kylie Herman (Weston, FL), meanwhile, claimed the 200-yard butterfly (2:19.58).

WPI (4-0) heads to Division I Providence Friday night for a double-dual with Coast Guard. First race is slated for 6pm. Babson (0-5) entertains Norwich Saturday at 1pm while Brandeis (1-6) is off until a trip to Division II Bentley Friday, November 20 for a 6pm start. Smith (2-1) makes the short trek to Springfield for a 7pm appointment on Tuesday.
