Minnesota Sweeps North Dakota

The University of Minnesota men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both collected commanding dual meet wins at North Dakota on Saturday. The men and women won a combined 27 of 32 events.

Women – W, 195-103

The Gopher women won 14 of 16 events for a 195-103 team win. Katelyn Holmquist won three individual events, while Mariam Khamis, Kaia Grobe and Abigail Raatz each picked up two individual wins.

Holmquist swept the backstroke events, with a time of 56.66 in the 100-yard race and 2:03.36 in the 200. She added a 200 individual medley win (2:07.33) and was part of the Gophers’ winning medley relay. Dani Bergeson finished second behind Holmquist in the 100 back.

Khamis had a personal-best score of 303.68 on the 3-meter diving board to lead a 1-2-3-4 finish for the Gophers. She notched a 285.30 to win the 1-meter. Beth Etterman came in second on the 3-meter.

Raatz, who was part of both first-place relays, won both spring freestyle races. She turned in times of 23.89 and 51.21 in the 50 and 100, respectively.

Grobe won the 200 free (1:52.72) ahead of Chantal Nack, and the 100 butterfly (56.00) ahead of Allison Schumacher, who grabbed two relay victories and silver finishes in both fly events. The Gophers claimed the first four spots in the 100 fly.

The Gophers’ 200-yard medley relay of Holmquist, Kaela Marcus, Schumacher and Abigail Raatz won by more than two seconds with a time of 1:45.07. Raatz, Bergeson, Schumacher and Grobe won the 200 free relay by nearly three seconds.

Minnesota took gold in both distance freestyle events. Brooke Lorentzen’s time of 10:24.13 in the 1,000 free earned her first place, while Alanda McDowell finished second. Breanne Siwicki won the 500 with a 5:03.87.

Kaela Marcus won the 200 breast (2:22.57) in front of Olivia Johnston, and finished second in the 100 breast (1:05.97) in addition to her 200 medley relay win.

Men – W, 193-103

The Gopher men won 13 events in a 193-103 dual meet victory. Nick Orf and Dylan Zoe each won twice.

Zoe posted a 370.58 to win on the 3-meter diving board, and a 341.70 to win on the 1-meter ahead of two teammates.

Orf swept the butterfly races. He led four consecutive Gophers in both the 200-yard (1:50.32), and 100-yard (50.39) events.

Ben Bravence won the 500 freestyle (4:32.69) and finished second in the 200 fly. Chase Bublitz won the 200 free (1:42.07) to lead a 1-2-3 Gopher finish, and placed second in the 100 fly.

Hunter Doerr, Ian Gordon and Bryce Boston were part of both Minnesota’s 200 medley relay (1:32.93) and 200 free relay (1:23.54) wins. Eric Sande was on the medley relay squad, and Ryan Miksch on the free relay.

Doerr won the 50 free (20.99), and Sande took gold in the 100 breaststroke (56.79). Miksch added a second-place finish in the 200 free.

Jakub Maly captured gold in the 200 breast (2:06.03) ahead of Brenner Hohenstein, and got silver in the 1,000 free. Jon Thielen won the 200 individual medley (1:55.70) and took second in the 100 breast. Jack Tribble notched a victory in the 100 back with a time of 52.01.

The Gophers return to the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center for the Arena Pro Swim Series Nov. 12-14. The USA Swimming event will feature Olympians and Olympic hopefuls.
