USC Sweeps Arizona State

Junior Chelsea Chenault, sophomores Pawel Furtek and Hannah Weiss and freshman Riley Scott all won two races apiece to lead the USC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams to a sweep of Arizona State in Tempe on Friday (Nov. 6).

The Trojan men improved to 5-0 overall, 1-0 in the Pac-12 with their 159-132 win over the Sun Devils while USC’s women’s squad moved to 4-1, 3-0 with its 178-106 triumph.

Chenault won the 200y fly in 1:59.72, just off an NCAA ‘B’ cut in her first race in the event this year, leading a 1-2-3 finish. Freshmen Madison Wright (2:00.48) and Lily Dubroff (2:02.93) followed closely behind. Chenault later claimed the 500y free in 4:50.75.

Furtek, in USC’s first mile this year, won the 1650y free in an NCAA ‘B’ cut 15:17.30 while senior teammate Ted Singley was second (15:35.34). Freshman Elizabeth Stinson won the women’s race in 16:42.87. Furtek returned to win the 500y free in 4:30.49 while junior Reed Malone was second (4:33.93), Singley third (4:34.72).

Weiss captured the 100y back (54.32), just 0.18 off her NCAA ‘B’ cut, and came back to win her first 200y back this year in 1:58.26, another ‘B’ cut. Freshman Jon Knox won the men’s 100y back (49.74) and was second in the 200y back (1:47.33), both season bests.

Scott swept the breaststroke events, winning the 100 in 1:02.53 and lowering her NCAA ‘B’ cut in the 200 to 2:14.37. Vose turned in a 2:16.54 for second. Klarskov captured the men’s 100y breast in 55.43.

Freshman Allie Wooden won the women’s 200y free in 1:49.66 while Malone won the men’s race in 1:38.42. Freshmen Victoria Toris (23.87) and Kyle Grissom (20.88) posted a pair of seconds in the women’s and men’s 50y free, respectively.

Junior Anika Apostalon won the 100y free in 49.23, lowering her NCAA ‘B’ cut in the race while Grissom took second again in the men’s heat (46.69).

Dubroff won the women ‘s 100y fly in 56.16, dropping her season best by 0.13, and Vose won the 200y IM in 2:03.84, good for a two-second drop. Domagala won the men’s race in 1:51.52.

Senior Deon Reid claimed the men’s 3-meter with a season-best 392.40 while senior teammate Collin Pollard won 1-meter with 341.85. Freshman Madison Witt took second on both boards to lead Troy, scoring 270.83 on 1-meter and 280.73 on 3-meter.

USC’s women’s 200y medley relay of Weiss, Scott, Dubroff and Apostalon opened with a win in 1:42.39 and the 200y free relay closed with Apostalon, junior Evan Swenson, Toris and freshman Tamara Santoyo winning the 200y free relay in 1:33.44. Both of Troy’s relays finished second.

Both teams will race at Arizona on Saturday at 10 a.m. PT.
