University of Houston Head Swimming & Diving Coach Ryan Wochomurka is proud to announce that Hannah Burandt has joined the Cougar program as Assistant Swimming Coach. Burandt will begin her duties on June 1, 2015.
“Hannah is one of the rising stars in the collegiate swimming community, and I am very proud that she has joined the Houston Swimming & Diving family,” said Wochomurka. “She is an extremely accomplished technical on-deck coach, but more importantly she is a phenomenal communicator and educator.”
“I'm honored to join the Houston Swimming & Diving family and excited about what the future holds for this program,” said Burandt. “I'd like to thank Coach Wochomurka for giving me this opportunity, and I can't wait to begin building a championship program at UH.”
Burandt comes to Houston after spending the 2014-15 season as an assistant coach at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. During her season in the nation’s capital, both the Hoya men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams placed second at the BIG EAST Conference Championship meet. Georgetown placed 23 student-athletes on the All-BIG EAST team during Burandt’s season with the program, setting a new school record, and they broke 17 program records in the pool.
Burandt assisted in all aspects of the Hoya program during her year at Georgetown, including recruiting, team operations, and day-to-day coaching responsibilities.
Prior to her season at Georgetown, Burandt worked with Wochomurka at Louisville, where she was a volunteer assistant coach in 2013-14. At Louisville, Burandt assisted in practice planning and implementation, and she built the program’s internal recruiting database from scratch.
Burandt also worked in the Sports Administration Department during her season at Louisville, where she taught undergraduate courses in sports administration and mentored undergraduate students.
Burandt received her first collegiate coaching experience at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, where she served on staff from 2011-13. During her tenure at Oberlin, the Yeo placed 30th at the NCAA Division III Championships in 2011, their highest finish in nearly two decades. She also helped the program break 39 individual records at Oberlin.
Burandt swam collegiately at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Mich., from 2005-09. She was a three-time Mid-American Conference All-Academic selection and earned the team’s Top Scholar award as a senior. She was an NCAA qualifier in the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle, as well as the 800-yard freestyle relay, and she helped the Eagles win MAC Team Championships in 2006 and 2007.
“Hannah's experience aligns perfectly with our needs and the vision for the future of our program,” Wochomurka added. “Her passion for the sport and for working with young people is apparent from the moment you meet her. I have no doubt she will be tireless in our common pursuit of chasing greatness.”
Burandt was a magna cum laude graduate from Eastern Michigan in 2009 with a B.S. in secondary math and math education. In addition to her work as a college swimming coach, she has also taught high school mathematics and coached with multiple swim clubs across the country.
