Washington College Splits With Dickinson

Visiting Washington College won eight of 11 events en route to a 124-78 victory over host Dickinson College in a Centennial Conference men's swimming dual meet this afternoon in Carlisle, Pa. The Shoremen improved to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in conference meets with the win, while the Red Devils fell to 5-4 and 1-2 with the loss.

The Shoremen led off the meet with a win in the 400 medley relay as junior Charles Logan(Durham, N.C./Riverside), freshman Kevin Mackenzie (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College H.S. [D.C.]), senior Greg Lee (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial), and junior Brent Longenecker (Maytown, Pa./Donegal) finished first in 3:39.04. They finished the meet with a winning time of 3:20.29 in the 400 freestyle relay turned in by Lee, Mackenzie, junior DJ Bradshaw (Reisterstown, Md./Calvert Hall), and senior Austin Yocum (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest).

In between, Washington won six individual events. Sophomore Pat Elliott (Media, Pa./Salesianum School [Del.]) accounted for two of those wins, taking the 1000 freestyle in 10:15.68 and the 200 backstroke in 1:59.43. Yocum won the 200 freestyle in 1:47.70 and was second in the 500 freestyle in 5:03.47. Mackenzie won the 100 freestyle in 48.80. 

Sophomore Brent Hochstein (Towsend, Del./Salesianum School) won the 200 butterfly in 2:01.57 and tied with Lee for second in the 200 individual medley in 2:04.98. Freshman Cody Weiler (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area) won the 50 freestyle in 22.05. Longenecker added a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle in 49.77. 

The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 6:00 p.m. Centennial Conference meet at Swarthmore.


Host Dickinson College defeated visiting Washington College, 138-64, in Centennial Conference women's swimming action this afternoon in Carlisle, Pa. The Red Devils improved to 8-2 overall and 3-1 in conference meets with the win, while the Shorewomen dropped to 4-4 and 1-3 with the loss. 

Sophomore Ellen Maxwell (Towson, Md./Loch Raven) and freshman Katie Gorman(Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park) each won one individual event for the Shorewomen in the loss. Maxwell took the 500 freestyle in 5:29.22, while Gorman won the 50 freestyle in 25.53. 

Freshman Jennifer Clune (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) added a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle in 56.76, while freshman Joelle Williamson (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor) was second in the 200 backstroke in 2:15.84. Junior Julianna Fritzinger (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion Area) placed second in the 200 breaststroke for the Shorewomen in 2:40.53.

Dickinson won both relays, but the second-place time of 4:13.59 turned in by Washington's Williamson, Clune, Gorman, and freshman Mackenzie Gaze(Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) was a team season-best.

The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday with a 6:00 p.m. Centennial Conference meet at Swarthmore.
