Delaware Falls to Penn

The University of Delaware’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving team wrapped up its regular season with pair of losses to Penn in a non-league meet Saturday.

Penn’s men’s team defeated the Delaware men (4-7, 0-4 CAA) by a score of 184-98, while the Quakers’ women’s squad topped the Blue Hen women (10-4, 4-3 CAA) 174-126.

“We competed today against a very talented Ivy League team in Penn today,” said University of Delaware head coach John Hayman. “They have great depth in almost every event and performed well in the meet. It was good to see our divers perform well and dominate their two events. Our duals are now over and we now must prepare for the CAA Championships in late February.”

For the third meet in a row, the performance of the Delaware divers was one of the bright spots for the Blue Hens.
Patrick McCann (Annandale, Va./Annandale) and Colin Hall were victorious in the 3 – meter and 1 – meter diving events, while Caitlin Stockwell (San Jose, Calif./Presentation) and Kristina Congdon (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) swept the women’s diving competitions.

Tomas Elder (Norman, Okla./Norman North) and Brian Murphy (Olney, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) were the only non-divers to notch a victory for the Delaware men Saturday. Elder touched first in the 100 butterfly in a time of 52.70, while Murphy tallied a win in the 200 IM with a time of 1:59.50.

Despite the loss, the men’s team recorded the three fastest times in the 100 butterfly and 200 IM races.

Annie Nunes (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) led the UD women with three victories in the meet. The sophomore recorded wins in the 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke, and 200 IM. Morgan Whyte (Chevy Chase, Md./St. John’s College HS) registered two wins for the Blue Hens as the junior touched first in the 50 and 100 freestyle competitions.

The Blue Hens will now be off until the Colonial Athletic Association Diving Championships Feb. 21-22. The event will be held at the University of Delaware’s Rawstrom Natatorium.
