Ohio State Sweeps Michigan State

The 12th-ranked Ohio State men’s swimming and diving team dominated Big Ten foe Michigan State Friday evening in East Lansing, Mich. by a score of 168-75. The Buckeyes were solid from the start, earning a McCaffree Pool record in the 400 medley relay and sweeping the diving both diving events.
 
The Scarlet and Gray kicked off the evening, going one-two in the 400 medley relay. Behind swims from Steven Zimmerman, DJ MacDonald, Matt McHugh and Michael DiSalle, Ohio State’s ‘A’ relay placed first in a pool-record time of 3:17.27. They were followed by the crew of Connor McDonald, Keanu Stevenson, Ching Lim and Josh Fleagle, who combined for a mark of 3:19.60.
 
Ohio State’s diving contingent came out very strong, sweeping the competition in both events. Veterans Stephen Ettienne and Shane Miszkiel finished one-two in the 1-meter event, while rookie Stephen Romanik continued to impress with a third-place showing. Romanik went on to win the 3-meter with a score of 383.02. Miszkiel earned the runner-up spot in the event and Ettienne completed the Buckeye trio in third.
 
Buckeye distance standout Brayden seal then posted a win in the 1000 freestyle. The rookie touched in a time of 9:25.87. Junior Josh Fleagle continued the momentum with a win of his own, this time in the 200 freestyle. With a time of 1:38.18, Fleagle wasn’t alone at the podium, as teammates Steffen Hillmer and Lim also made the top-3.
 
DiSalle earned his first individual win, and second overall, in the 50 freestyle in a time of 21.15. In the 100 butterfly, it was DiSalle’s relay counterpart McHugh who claimed victory, finishing in a time of 49.02.
 
Rookie Jack DiSalle brought home a win in the 100 freestyle (46.80), while Zimmerman, a senior this season, claimed the 100 backstroke in 49.42. MacDonald placed first in his trademark 100 breaststroke, posting a time of 55.63.
 
The Buckeyes closed the meet with a second-place showing in the 200 freestyle relay. Kevin Musterait, Thomas Trace, Nick Brodie and Vladislav Komarov represented the Scarlet and Gray for the runner-up spot, earning a mark of 1:23.96.
 
Tomorrow, Ohio State will head to Ann Arbor for a showdown with rival Michigan. The meet is scheduled to begin at noon.

 

The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team defeated Michigan State by a margin of 148.5-93.5 Friday evening in East Lansing, Mich. The Buckeyes will look to continue the momentum tomorrow, as the squad next travels to Ann Arbor to face-off against rival Michigan.
 
Sophomore Kaitlyn Ferrara started the Buckeyes off on a winning note, claiming the 1000 freestyle in a time of 10:15.15. Sophomore standout Lindsey Clary followed it up with a first-place touch in the 200 freestyle (1:52.17), while her Buckeye teammates Macie McNichols and Paige Kelly earned second and third, respectively.
 
Ohio State posted the top-2 times in the 50 freestyle, with freshman Cheyenne Meek leading the way in first (24.32). Senior Aliena Schmidtke picked up the runner-up spot with a mark of 24.46. The 200 individual medley also went in favor of the Buckeyes. Touching first was senior Lauren Davis, who earned a time of 2:06.76 in the event.
 
Rookie Zhesi Li solidified a win in her signature 100 butterfly with a time of 55.50. In the 500 freestyle, Gillig touched first in 5:01.26. Registering Ohio State’s seventh win of the evening was sophomore Taylor Vargo, who recorded a time of 1:04.04 in the 100 breaststroke.
 
The Buckeyes concluded the meet with a first-place touch in the 200 freestyle relay. The contingent of Katy Luchansky, Annie Jongekrijg, McNichols and Meet recorded the win with a mark of 1:33.36.
 
Senior diver Taylor Ford placed first in the 1-meter event with a score of 295.94. Buckeye diving was strong in the event, as Brittany Menninger earned second with a 281.47.
