Bowling Green State Sweeps Marshall, Michigan State

The Bowling Green State University swim and dive team extended its dual meet unbeaten streak to 10 by defeating Big Ten foe Michigan State, as well as Marshall, Friday night at Cooper Pool. After more than a month off from competition, the Falcons picked up where they left ?off by defeating Michigan State 175-125 and Marshall 181-119. MSU defeated Marshall, 185-115.

"It was great to be back and competing again," said Head Coach Petra Martin. "Right now, we are a few weeks away from MAC Championships so it's time for us to switch back from training camp mode and start getting aggressive again and start racing."

The Falcons won 10/16 events, led by sophomore Victoria Griffin with three. Freshman Franziska Wohlert, who was competing in the first meet of her collegiate career, won two events, while Daniela Carrillo won a pair of her own. Carrillo and Griffin were also a part of the winning 400 freestyle relay team.

Griffin remained undefeated in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.61 seconds. She won the 100 freestyle in 50.79 seconds and took the 200 freestyle in 1:51.48 seconds. In fact, she won the 100 freestyle by almost two seconds over her nearest competitor, teammate Kayla Effinger.

Carrillo's victories came in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Wohlert won her first two events, the 100 and 200 backstroke, where she swam a 56.53 and 2:00.69, respectively.  She also placed third in the 400 individual medley.

"We are excited about her. She adds a lot of speed to a lot of different events, which is fun because we can play with that a little bit. We know what we would like to do with her at the end of the year, but for right now we can see what our options are and it's great to have more fast swimmers on our team," Martin said.

Along with the individual event victories, the Falcons also finished 1-2 in the 100 back, 100 breast and 50 free. BG swept first through third place in the 100 freestyle as well.

Estela Davis won an individual event in the 400 IM with a time of 4:26.08.

This is the second straight year the Falcons have defeated the Spartans. Last season in East Lansing, Bowling Green edged out MSU 150-144 in the final event. This year, the Orange and Brown dominated wire to wire.

With the two wins this evening, BG improves to 5-0 on the season. The team returns to Cooper Pool tomorrow at 11 a.m. to take on Mid-American Conference rival Toledo, as well as Marshall again.
