George Washington Takes Second at Rhode Island Invite

The George Washington men's swimming and diving team took second place in the two-day Rhode Island Invitational at the Rams' Tootell Aquatic Center.

The Colonials finished with 369 points, with Atlantic 10 rival Massachusetts' 529 points clinching the victory. The Rhode Island men's club swimming team earned 18 points.

Sophomore Liam Huffman paced the Colonials with a pair of first-place finishes, clocking times of 1.43.49 in the 200-yard freestyle and 9:41.19 in the 1,000 free. Sophomore Ben Fitch also contributed a top finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 52.77, followed closely by classmate Bogdan Balteanu in second (53.37). Senior Goran Koprivnjak rounded out the day's top honors in the 200 fly with a time of 1:55.09 to edge out Fitch, who finished in second (1:56.08).

GW posted a half-dozen additional runner-up finishes on day two of the invitational. Seniors Joe Lipworth and Adam Rabe, freshman Gustav Hokfelt and Fitch finished in 1:39.17 in the 200-yard medley relay for second place. Fitch and Hokfelt teamed up with Balteanu and Koprivnjak to log a second-best time of 3:12.91 in the 400-yard free relay. Rabe contributed a pair of second-place individual performances in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.29) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:11.03). Lipworth and Koprivnjak also chipped in runner-up efforts in the 100-yard backstroke (54.53) and 100-yard freestyle (48.59), respectively.

Balteanu earned a third-place finish in the 100 free with a time of 48.59.

The Colonials return the the pool on Saturday, Jan. 17, when they visit local rival Georgetown. 

 

The George Washington women's swimming and diving team placed second in the two-day Rhode Island Invitational at the Rams' Tootell Aquatic Center.

The Colonials finished with 390 points, outscoring the host Rams' 365.50. Massachusetts won the three-team meet with 472.50 points.

Day two of competition was highlighted by four top finishes for GW, paced by three first-place performances from senior Morgan Zebley. Zebley was joined by classmate Janica Lee and freshmen Abigail Fusco and Hannah Kopydlowski in a top finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:51.02. Zebley also produced the quickest time of 57.62 in the 100-yard butterfly before teaming up with Lee, sophomore Lauren Law and Kopydlowski to win the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:37.32). Sophomore Carly Whitmer rounded out the day's top performances, taking the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:06.61.

Lee boasted a pair of second-place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.87) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:25.61). Law and freshman Tatyana Smolyansky also notched runner-up efforts in the 400-yard individual medley (4:40.60) and 100-yard backstroke (1:00.74), respectively.

GW also received a quartet of third-place finishes from Whitmer in the 100 fly (58.45), Fusco in the 200 back (2:09.03), Kopydlowski in the 100-yard freestyle (55.01) and junior Hannah Schaefer in the 1,000 free (10:45.14).

The Colonials return the pool on Saturday, Jan. 17, when they visit local rival Georgetown.
