Queens Completes Day One of Royal Invite

Queens University of Charlotte men’s and women’s swim teams soared the water on Friday, taking several NCAA “B” Standard cuts as the Royals look to capitalize at nationals. 
 
In the preliminaries races, Patricia Castro-Ortega secured a 2:04.00 NCAA “B” Standard time for the 200 Yard Individual Medley breaking the pool record.
 
Lillian Gordy found her NCAA “B” time with a 4:55.51, also shattering the pool record for the 500 Yard Freestyle.
 
Caroline Arakelian concluded the morning with the 100 Yard Breaststroke posting a 1:04.54 to grab a “B” standard time.
 
Heading into the night, Niclas Erikson took a NCAA “B” Standard in the 200 Yard Individual Medley reaching the wall with a 1:50.75. He would take a 1:50.36 that morning during the preliminary swim.
 
John Suther wrapped up the men’s performance in the 100 Yard Freestyle with a NCAA “B” Standard mark. He took a 45.75 for the event.
 
The team continues tomorrow as more Royals look to qualify for the NCAA National Championships on March 11-14, 2015.

 

Wingate

The nationally-ranked Wingate University men's and women's swimming teams posted five "A" finals victories and recorded seven NCAA Division II "B" cuts on the first night of the 2015 Royal Invitational at the Levine Center on the Queens University of Charlotte campus Friday. Eleven Wingate swimming student-athletes are competing in the two-day event (Friday finals, Friday preliminaries, Friday PM time trials, Friday AM time trials).

Two Wingate men established Levine Center pool records. Bulldog sophomore Roman Kanyuka (Moscow, Russia) won the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 55.10, while senior David Collum (DeLand, Fla.) won the 200 Individual Medley with a time of 1:48.22. Both Kanyuka and Collum post NCAA Division II "B" cuts with their Friday triumphs.

Bulldog senior Samuel Knapp (Madison, Ala.) won the 200 Backstroke with an NCAA Division II "B" cut time of 1:48.65. Freshman teammate Tripp Wright (Cypress, Texas) touched first in the 100 Freestyle "B" final with a time of 48.17.

In time trials, both junior Damjan Petrovski (Skopje, Macedonia) and sophomore Øystein Fjeldberg (Oslo, Norway) recorded D2 "B" cuts. Petrovski swam a 2:00.56 time in the 200 Breaststroke, while Fjeldberg posted a time of 3:56.63 in the 400 Individual Medley. The Wingate 200 Medley Relay team had a D2 "B" cut time of 1:31.13 in the time trials.

For the Wingate women, Kellie Gervas (Imperial, Pa.) won the 200 Butterfly with a D2 "B" cut time of 2:05.99. Sophomore teammate Erin Brooks (Hilliard, Ohio) touched first in the 200 Breaststroke "A" final with a triumphant time of 2:05.48.
