Southern Illnois Wraps Up Intrasquad Competition

The Southern Illinois University swimming teams wrapped up a pair of meets this weekend in their final tuneup before opening the regular season against Evansville. 

Friday’s action saw the Salukis compete in the Saluki Miler. Freshman Bryn Handley had a strong showing for the women’s team, winning both the 400 SC yard IM and the 1650 SC yard Freestyle. Handley’s time of 4:37.08 in the 400 IM was 13 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. In the 1650 SC yard Freestyle, Handley took the crown in a time of 17:21.94. 

On the men’s side of the intrasquad competition, sophomore Andre Brilhante won the 400 SC yard IM. Brilhante won the event with a time of 4:08.12. Freshman Michael Wolfe earned a win in the 1650 SC yard Freestyle, besting the field with a time of 16:08.71. 

On Saturday, SIU competed in the Saluki Open Water at Little Grassy Lake. Brilhante and Wolfe followed their strong performances on Friday by tying for first place on Saturday. The duo finished the race with a time of 54:59. Senior Till Pallmann rounded out the top-three finishers with a time of 55:41. 

Freshman Kelsie Walker won the women’s race, crossing the finish line in 56:42. Handley finished eight seconds behind Walker to take second. Freshman Nicole Fuller took third place with a time of 56:55.
