Georgia Women Down Vandy in Opener

The Georgia women's swimming team won all 14 races and defeated Vanderbilt 153-94 in the 2014-15 season opener on Wednesday at Gabrielsen Natatorium.

The Lady Bulldogs (1-0, 1-0 SEC) claimed their 90th straight victory at home, extending their record for all Georgia sports. They are 91-1 all-time at Gabrielsen Natatorium in dual/tri meets dating back to 1995.

"I thought our kids did a great job of preparing for every single event," said Harvey Humphries, Georgia's Acting Head Coach. "So we're proud of where they were mentally. We're still getting our conditioning levels up and we need to sharpen up on some things, but as first meets go, this was one that we can build on. This was a good day."

Hali Flickinger and Amber McDermott were double winners for Georgia on Wednesday. Flickinger claimed the 100 backstroke in 54.73 and the 500 freestyle in 4:51.38. McDermott won the 200 backstroke in 2:00.45 and had the fastest time in the 200 individual medley at 2:02.77.

Three freshmen posted wins in their collegiate debuts: Kylie Stewart in the 200 freestyle (1:49.90), Megan Kingsley in the 200 butterfly (2:01.47) and Meaghan Raab in the 200 breaststroke (2:19.14).

Georgia's other wins came from Jordan Mattern in the 1,000 freestyle (9:59.71); Emily Cameron in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.91); Lauren Harrington in the 50 freestyle (23.58); Chantal Van Landeghem in the 100 freestyle (50.12); and Maddie Locus in the 100 butterfly (55.85).

Raab, Cameron, Locus and Brittany MacLean teamed up to win the 200 medley relay in 1:43.58, while the 200 freestyle relay of Locus, Anna McKenzie, Stewart and Shannon O'Malley took first in 1:34.55.

Both of Georgia's teams will be in action Oct. 10 when they entertain Alabama.
