USC Men Top UCSB, Women Drop Oregon State

USC, which got a pair of distance freestyle wins from freshman Pawel Furtek, defeated host UC Santa Barbara, 152-107, in a Pac-12 dual meet on Saturday (Oct. 18).

USC, which improved to 2-0 after a win at Cal Poly on Friday, opened the meet with a win in the 200y medley relay as juniors Luca Spinazzola and Morten Klarskov and sophomores Dylan Carter and Santo Condorelli won in 1:30.04.

Furtek, a Polish distance specialist, next won the 1000y free in 9:12.25, which would have made him third fastest on the team last year. Junior Ted Singley was second (9:23.04).

Sophomore Reed Malone took the 200y free in 1:40.10 while sophomore Michael Domagala was third (1:41.30). Senior Cary Wright (49.61) and Spinazzola (50.05) then went 1-2 in the 100y back.

Sophomore Steven Stumph won the 100y breast in 56.98 while freshman Jonah Hu was third (58.92). Carter (20.88) and junior Maclin Davis (21.25) went 1-2 in the 50y free and Condorelli won the 100y free (44.59).

Estonian freshman Ralf Tribuntsov (1:49.18) and Canadian senior Chad Bobrosky (1:51.77) went 1-2 in the 200y back with frosh Jonathan Knox third (1:52.69).

Klarskov took first in the 200y breast (2:01.83), Furtek came back to win the 500y free (4:32.62) with freshman Jason O’Brien second (4:38.84) and Wright touched first in the 400y IM in 4:02.67.

USC closed the meet as sophomore David Morgan Jr., Condorelli, Carter and Tribuntsov touched the wall first in the 400y free relay in 3:00.86.

Women's Recaps

The USC women’s swimming and diving teams divided efforts Saturday (Oct. 18), a partial squad defeating Oregon State in a Pac-12 dual meet in Corvallis, Ore., while a nine-woman contingent finishing fourth in the SMU Classic in Dallas.

The Trojans improved to 2-0 overall, 2-0 in the Pac-12 with a 153-107 dual meet win over the Beavers.

In the win over the Beavers, USC opened with a first in the 200y medley relay as sophomores Diana Chang and Jamie Christy and seniors Andrea Kropp and Rebecca Heyliger won in 1:45.33.

After an Oregon State win in the 1000y free, junior Joanna Stenkvist won the 200y free in 1:53.55 while Chang (55.94) sophomore Sidney Cooke (56.73) went 1-2 in the 100y back.

Kropp (1:02.97) and Christy (1:04.96) went 1-2 in the 100y breast and sophomore Maggie D’Innocenzo won the 200y fly (2:03.34).

USC swept the sprints as Heylinger, a co-captain, claimed the 50y free in 24.22 for her first individual event win of her career and Chang won the 100y free in 51.42.

Stenkvist doubled up by winning the 200y back in 2:03.02 while Kropp tripled up after taking first in the 200y breast (2:14.05) and the 200y IM (2:03.73). Freshman Kindle Van Linge also won, claiming the 100y fly in 57.31.

The Trojans closed the meet with a win in the 400y free relay as Stenkvist, Chang, Heyliger and Cooke won in 3:32.24.

The Trojans finished fourth in the SMU Classic in a tight affair. LSU won with 319 points and was followed by Louisville (301.50), SMU (296), USC (283), North Carolina State (235.50) and Miami (218).

USC got wins from sophomore Chelsea Chenault in the 500y free (4:42.44), junior Kendyl Stewart in the 200y back (1:54.59) and junior Jasmine Tosky in the 200y fly (1:55.59). USC was also second in the 200y free relay as junior Kasia Wilk, Tosky, Chenault and sophomore Evan Swenson finished in 1:31.43, 0.09 back of SMU.

Senior Haley Ishimatsu was third on 3-meter (330.50), Chenault won the 200y fly ‘B’ final with a 1:57.82 that would’ve been fourth in the ‘A’ final and Stewart was second in the ‘B’ final of the 200y IM (2:00.85), which would’ve have been third in the 200y IM ‘A’ final.
