Georgia Sweeps UNC

The Georgia swimming teams topped UNC on the road for their second sweep of the season on Friday evening. The Bulldogs, now 2-0, outscored the Tar Heels 155-145, while the 3-0 Lady Bulldogs finished with a final tally of 164-136.

Both the men’s and women’s teams for the University of North Carolina fell to 1-1 on the season.

Matias Koski and Chase Kalisz were triple winners for the Bulldogs.  In the 100, 200 and 500 freestyle, Koski posted times of 44.39, 1:37.44 and 4:23.38, respectively.  Kalisz also picked up three wins, claiming the 200 butterfly in 1:43.78, the 200 breaststroke in 1:57.48 and the 400 individual medley in 3:50.38

In the 1000 freestyle, freshman Kevin Litherland won with a time of 9:12.57. Nicolas Fink took first with a time of 54.26 in the 100 breaststroke. Ty Stewart posted a top time of 1:46.34 in the 200 backstroke.

Amber McDermott, Chantal Van Landeghem and Kylie Stewart were double winners for the Lady Bulldogs. McDermott touched in first with times of 4:47.59 in the 500 freestyle and 4:13.47 in the 400 individual medley. Van Landeghem recorded top times in the 50 and 100 freestyle, finishing at 22.71 and 49.90, respectively. Stewart, a freshman in her third meet for Georgia, took the 100 backstroke in 53.64 and the 200 backstroke in 1:55.01.

Brittany MacLean finished first with a time of 9:43.04 in the 1000 freestyle. Hali Flickinger posted a top time of 1:57.16 in the 200 butterfly, while Annie Zhu claimed the 200 breaststroke in 2:14.36. The team of Van Landeghem, Maddie Locus, Olivia Smoliga and Stewart won the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:21.23.

Georgia will continue its battle on the road against N.C. State on Saturday, Oct. 18. The meet will begin at 11 am ET.

The North Carolina men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams continued dual meet action Friday night at Koury Natatorium.  The Tar Heel women fell to the defending NCAA champion Bulldogs 164-136 while the UNC men came up short against a Bulldog squad that finished fifth in last year’s NCAA meet, 155-145.

The Carolina men were led by the performance of junior Sam Lewis who swam on two victorious relay teams and captured the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly.  UNC sophomore Jack Nyquist captured both diving events and junior Nic Graesser swam on both winning relays and captured the 100-yard backstroke.

Five different women won events on Friday and the Carolina team also began the meet with an impressive performance in winning the 200-yard medley relay.

“We just finished up a great meet with the University of Georgia and while we didn’t end up on the winning side of the score we had a good meet,” said head coach Rich DeSelm.  “Our divers especially were fabulous.  We dominated men and women both one-meter and three-meter.  UNC diving is on fire, it’s really doing well.”

Carolina’s men swept the relays with the 200-yard medley unit of Graesser, Kurt Wohlrab, Lewis and Logan Heck going 1:27.74, which as of Friday is the nation’s top time in the event.  UNC’s 400-yard freestyle relay also triumphed in a time of 2:58.41, just shy of the time Carolina put up last Friday against Tennessee.  The 400 free relay included Heck, Lewis, Graesser and Ben Colley.

Lewis’ night got only better as he swept two individual events.  He won the 50-yard freestyle in 20.31 and then led a 1-2 UNC finish in the 100-yard butterfly with Colley.  Lewis’ time of 47.35 is the fastest he has ever swum in a regular-season meet and now ranks as the top time in the nation, eclipsing the time Colley put up last week against Tennessee.

“Sam Lewis had a great split on the fly, won the 50 free, 100 fly and was a key factor in the 400 free relay.  He was definitely the guy carrying the men’s team tonight,” said DeSelm.

Nyquist continued his domination of the boards for the Tar Heels and he is now 4-for-4 in winning events in two meets against Southeastern Conference powers.  Nyquist won the one-meter Friday with 375.98 points and he captured the three-meter with 396.60.

Graesser also turned in a stellar performance as he was on both victorious relays and won the 100-yard backstroke in 48.22, the second fastest time nationally so far this collegiate season.

On the women’s side, UNC got a 200-yard medley relay win from the unit of Hellen Moffitt, Katie Munch, Hannah Lincoln and Sarah Hitchens at 1:40.95.  Other swimming winners were Danielle Siverling at 1:47.01 in the 200 freestyle, which is the second fastest in the nation so far, along with Rachel Canty in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.91) and Sarah Koucheki in the 100-yard butterfly (54.97).

Carolina’s women’s divers continued to excel for the second straight week as they traded event wins and set school records.  Freshman Elissa Dawson won the three-meter event with a school record score of 355.13.  That broke the record set last Friday by Michole Timm at 352.35.  Timm then gained a measure of revenge when she won the one-meter board with a score of 336.53, a new school record that broke the mark Dawson set last week at 320.40.

UNC will next be in action on Saturday, October 25, when it begins ACC dual meet competition against Virginia Tech at 5 p.m. at Koury Natatorium.  The Hokies’ men’s team comes to Chapel Hill as the defending ACC champion.
