Senior Andrea Kropp and junior Jasmine Tosky won twice each for the USC women while freshman Pawel Furtek won two events for the men as the Trojan women’s and men’s swimming and diving teams swept Arizona State on Friday night (Nov. 14) at Uytengsu Aquatics Center.
The Trojan men won 165-125 while the women’s team won 169-127. Both teams improved to 3-0 overall, 3-0 in the Pac-12.
USC opened the meet by sweeping the 400y medley relays. Freshman Hannah Weiss, senior Andrea Kropp and juniors Kendyl Stewart and Tosky won in 3:39.77 while the men’s squad of senior Luca Spinazzola, junior Ridge Altman and sophomore Dylan Carter and Santo Condorelli won in 3:14.40.
Arizona State scored its first win as sophomore Anna Olasz won the women’s 1000y free in 10:01.52 while Trojan sophomore Maggie D’Innocenzo was second in a USC season-best 10:13.04. In the men’s 1000y free, Furtek won by more than 20 seconds with a 9:12.98 with freshman teammate Ian Silverman taking second (9:33.51).
The Sun Devils won again in the women’s 200y free as Juanita Barreto (1:50.17) out-touched Stewart (1:50.32). Sophomore Michael Domagala won the men’s race for the Trojans in 1:38.95 with ASU’s Barkley Perry (1:40.53) second.
Weiss got USC a win in the 100y back (54.62), leading a 1-2-3 finish with sophomore Sydney Cooke (56.22) and junior Joanna Stenkvist (56.24) following her into the wall. Senior Luca Spinazzola then set a USC season-best in the 100y back in 48.56.
ASU won its third women’s event in four races as freshman Jorie Caneta claimed the 100y breast in 1:02.06 to top Tosky’s second-place 1:03.25. Junior Ridge Altman continued USC’s men’s win streak as he out-touched the field to win the men’s 100y breast in 56.26 (season best).
The Trojans got their second individual win as Kropp took control of the 200y fly and won in a season’s best 2:02.33. ASU senior Zac Dalby then registered the Sun Devils’ first men’s win with a 1:49.71 in the 200y fly with USC junior Ted Singley second (1:49.92, season’s best).
The ASU women won its fourth event as Alysha Bush (23.61) beat USC sophomore Evan Swenson (23.71) to the wall in the women’s 50y free. In the men’s race, Carter turned in a season-best and NCAA ‘B’ cut 20.13 as Condorelli took second (20.42).
USC senior Haley Ishimatsu won the 1-meter springboard with 322.88 points. Freshman Dashiell Enos won the 3-meter with 362.10.
After the break, ASU’s Bush won her second event, taking the 100y free in 51.20 as USC’s Stewart got edged for the second time in 51.25. USC sophomore Diana Chang was third (51.39).
Tosky picked up a win in the 200y back in 2:01.20 with D’Innocenzo posting her second second-place finish in 2:01.45. For the men, freshman Ralf Tribuntsov won in 1:47.86 with more than a three-second cushion.
Kropp won again in her specialty, the 200y breast, in 2:14.11, just 0.06 off her season best. ASU’s Thibaut Capitaine won the men’s 200y breast in 2:02.17, beating Altman to the wall (2:02.76).
Sophomore Chelsea Chenault won the women’s 500y free in 4:55.94 with Stenkvist second in 4:56.17. Furtek then doubled up with a win in the men’s 500y free in 4:32.92 to lead a 1-2-3 finish as Singley was second (4:36.73) and Silverman third (4:40.75).
Junior Lucy Worrall won the women’s 100y fly in season-best 55.71 with Weiss second (56.80). ASU’s Tadas Duskinas won the men’s 100y fly in 48.65 with Domagala second (48.82).
ASU freshman Mara Aiacoboae (333.30) edged Ishimatsu (331.40) in women’s 3-meter while Trojan junior Collin Pollard won the men’s 1-meter (377.85).
Tosky got her second victory with a four-second win in the 200y IM (2:01.87) while senior Cary Wright finished the individual action by winning the men’s 200y IM in 1:51.53.
ASU’s women won the 200y free relay in 1:33.82, edging USC’s 1:34.09. The USC men’s relay of sophomore David Morgan, Carter, Condorelli and Silverman won in 1:21.66, a season best.
USC hosts Arizona’s men’s and women’s teams Saturday at 2 p.m.
