Marshall University's swimming and diving continued to build on its strong early season form in its meet against Vanderbilt and Xavier at the Fitch Natatorium Saturday. The Herd defeated Xavier 212 to 82, but dropped its meet to SEC opponent Vanderbilt 150 to 143. Vanderbilt beat Xavier 189-73.
AGAINST VANDERBILT AND XAVIER
Freshman Gloriya Mavrova (Alexandria, Virginia) won two events for the Herd. Mavrova won the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 24.38. Mavrova then won the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 53.02.
Senior Kaley Gregory (Hurricane, W.Va.) won the 1,000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:23.27.
Freshman Chloe Jones led the way for the Marshall divers, posting a 198.22 in the 3 meter diving and a 220.57 in the one meter diving event.
Four swimmers set eight different times in the school’s all-time top-ten. Freshman Nele Albers (Ludinghausen, Germany) placed fifth all-time in the 200 breaststroke and 200 individual medley. Sophomore Teel Hartmann (Louisville, KY) placed eighth in the 1,000 freestyle. Mavrova placed fifth and seventh in the 100 freestyle and 50 freestyle, respectively. She also swam for the seventh-fastest 100 fly time in school history. Freshman Madi Pulfer (Ottowa, Ontario) placed fourth in the 200 backstroke and sixth in the 100 backstroke.

Head Coach Bill Tramel on the Meet:
"What a meet! While we came out on the short side by a mere 7 points, we performed awesome today. All week we talked about being attentive to details. That if we can execute, then everything will take care of itself. We had season bests in 34 of our 42 individual swims today. That's over 80 percent. Our divers got involved today as well. And historically, 8 performances by 4 different swimmers were times among our All-Time Top Ten in school history."
"I think the biggest factor though, was the excitement our women showed today. They were cheering for one another. They were involved in every moment of the meet. That wasn't the case last week. It's no accident we performed better today. Everyone had their sisters (teammates) supporting them all day. When you work as one unit, one team, one family, great things happen. Our staff is very proud of our Marshall Swimming and Diving family today."

“Overall, I’m happy with how the divers performed. They were a little more hit or miss today, but I may just be saying that because I’ve been coaching them longer now. There are a few basic mechanical things we need to work on, but after we get that taken care of, I expect a big jump from us.”
